Although you are probably referring to drummers who are still alive,
my overwhelming number one vote is Buddy Rich.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Rich

Second place goes to Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake and Palmer)

    bonham...

paul mccartney's drummer (Hawaiian dude) is really good. does a lot of studio work for famous musicians/artists.

i think a lot of the drummers mentioned before are good but i think the technical and flashy drumming doesn't always mean better. taste and knowing your place in the mix is important to me.

I keep saying this... I've been playing for 26 years and I've heard drummers try to be Joey Jordisson on their first try and they've failed yet I've also seen drummers keep the beat dna use simple ryhtms and get great results every single time... Less is more, as they say.

I find it funny that everyone says Rush's drummer and no one seems to know a name, on a drum thread, Neil Peart is sick, joey is sick yes, and travis barker as well, but im going to say John Dolmayan from system of a down has got to be the best, joey is fast yes but john gets so technical, its just crazy

I've said Neil Peart 3 times... Luke From Vertiis, Jester and now I'll say it again

NEIL PEART, CANADIAN AND ONE OF THE FINEST DRUMMERS TO GRACE A STOOL.

Saying John Dolmayan is "the best" is good for an opinion but as fact? No.

    Default your right

i shouldnt have said "the best" there, because honestly i do think neil peart is probably the greatest drummer, i just never see johns name in any of these forums and i think he deserves to be looked at a bit more, god hes good

He is good and to be honest, his name is bandied around a lot but usually by kids who have only heard SOAD so they believe they're "da best band EVA" (sic).

I believe he is a good, GOOD drummer but compared to Neil Peart or David Lombardo or Nick Menza, he's got a hell of a way to go yet.
    * Difference of opinion is not argument, only difference.
    * Just because you don't like something, doesn't make it sh*t
    * You are all individual, just like everyone else.

You're absolutely right!! I've been a fan of Rush and Neil Peart from the very beginning. On Rush's first album they had a drummer named John Rutsey. Go to the second album (Fly By Night), Rush's 1st album with Neil and you will be astounded by the difference. I've seen this band 12 times and am always amazed by the talent of this drummer. Easily #1.

PS: Check out "Burning for Buddy" and "Anatomy of a Drum Solo". Both by Neil Peart. "Burning for Buddy" is a tribute to Buddy Rich authorized by Buddy"s daughter. Neil thinks Buddy was the best drummer ever!!

    Travis Barker is the Man!

How about Aaron Gillespie from Underoath?

Amazing in vocals and keeping up beats at the same time.
