This has been driving me crazy for a week now.....please save me !!

I have the following lyrics buzzing round my head

And I wish I could ??????? "

Male singer , rock guitar band , sung with regret and heartache ( if that makes sense !! ) with an accent on the word `wish`. Think they were from chorus.

Has a Goo Goo Dolls ` Iris `vibe and feel to it .

I have a feeling I have heard it on a film soundtrack , pressumably played over some shots of a bloke who has been dumped as he walks through a city at night time ....you know the stuff , all very moody and heart rending.

Anyway , hope you can identify the song and artist
