I'll find it!!!! Yeah!!!! Gift to all of you!!! The english version is in the video of youtube, but i'm not sure of translation....

YouTube - Theodorakis Farantouri To Yelasto Pedi 1974

    Una canción muy linda

    EL CHICO SONRIENTE

Veo que una chica llora, lamenta aflictivamente,

Tenía valentía y vigor y lamentaré para siempre,
Su paso vivo, su risa dulce.
Nuestros enemigos mataron el chico sonriente.

Porque tú matarías todos nuestros enemigos,
Gloria, honor al inolvidable chico sonriente.

    Default Lyrics Correction!!!

'twas an august morning near dawn
I went out to take air in the flowered earth

    I see a daughter crying broken-hearted mourning
my heart broke for we've lost the laughing boy

he had a manly courage and eternally I will mourn
his child-like step, his sweet laugh

Ah, curse the time, that damned moment
σκοτώσαν οι δικοί μας το γελαστό παιδί <<<< Correction on this line
one of our own have killed the laughing boy <<<< the singers mix this up and confuse the whole song

O for him to have died at the leader's side
and only from an English shot should have he gone

or from a hunger-strike in jail
it would have been an honour to have lost the laughing boy

my princely love y love I shall cry for you
for whatever you've done for eon I shall tell

because all our enemies you would have undone
Glory and honour to the unforgettable laughing boy

As for an English Translation, I'll provide the original English which was translated into Greek to provide this song

    THE LAUGHING BOY

It was on an August morning, all in the moring hours,
I went to take the warming air all in the month of flowers,
And there I saw a maiden and heard her mournful cry,
Oh, what will mend my broken heart, I’ve lost my Laughing Boy.
So strong, so wide, so brave he was, I’ll mourn his loss too sore
When thinking that we’ll hear the laugh or springing step no more.
Ah, curse the time, and sad the loss my heart to crucify,
Than an Irish son, with a rebel gun, shot down my Laughing Boy.
Oh, had he died by Pearse’s side, or in the G.P.O.,
Killed by an English bullet from the rifle of the foe,
Or forcibly fed while Ashe lay dead in the dungeons of Mountjoy,
I’d have cried with pride at the way he died, my own dear Laughing Boy.
My princely love, can ageless love do more than tell to you
Go raibh mile maith Agath, for all you tried to do,
For all you did and would have done, my enemies to destroy,
I’ll prize your name and guard your fame, my own dear Laughing Boy.

Are you saying then that gelasto paidi was originally an english song? There's something fishy here....

Zvezda, "gelasto paidi" is a greek version of a poem of irish poet Brendan Behan. The "laughing boy" is Michael Collins, originally.
Mikis Theodorakis take this poem, and make a cover thinking in Gregoris Lambrakis, pacifist activist killed by extrem right wing of Greece.
Have you seen the movie "Z"? Gelasto paidi is soundtrack of this movie.

Tipota Zvezda . I recommend you to see "Z" (director: Costa Gavras). It's a hard movie, but it's based on real life (and in a novel of Vasilis Vasilikos).

Here you have a video of final minutes of the movie, with "gelasto paidi". You will see why movie is called "Z"... ...If you don't understand something, i can translate it to english:

Thanks for the offer and the links. I was familiar with the events and wikipedia filled the blanks
I will record Z if it's ever on, although it's not the kind of film one could expect to watch on British tv, not to mention the fact that I have an aversion to anything that does not have a happy ending

Nice photo. Let me guess, taken at Oia?
