Default Lyrics and translation for French Affair & La Grand Orchestra

    Hi guys,
I just decided to learn a little French, so I purchased the French Affair and La Grand Orchestra CD's. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some lyrics and translations to the following songs:

    French Affair:
    Symphonie d'amour
    L'amour
    Oh dis-moi
    C'est la vie
    Danse avec moi
    Sans concession
    Bossa Paris
    Melancolic

    Le Grand Orchestre du Splendid:
    Fais-moi mal Johnny
    J'suis snob
    A Cannes cet ete
    J'en ai marre de l'amour
    Jesuis mordue

    Thanks so Much!!!!

    Default French lyrics

Hi Miranda, I start with this song which is very famous in France, and very funny as well but absolutly not politically correct. The original version was written and sung by French poet Boris Vian. (the same that wrote "j'suis snob").

Lots of lines are difficult to translate because of the slang used.

Il s'est levé à mon approche
(he stood up when I approached him)
Debout, il était bien plus p'tit
(once up he was really smaller)
Je me suis dit c'est dans la poche
(I thought to myself, "it's in the bag!")
Ce mignon-là, c'est pour mon lit
(That cutie he's for my bed)
    Il m'arrivait jusqu'à l'épaule
(He came up to my shoulder)
Mais il était râblé comme tout
( but he was very well built)
(he followed me until my shack)
Et j'ai crié vas-y mon loup
(and I shouted, go on Wolfy)

    Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    (hurt me Johnny)
    Envole-moi au ciel... zoum!
(fly me to the sky, zoom)
    Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    (hurt me Johnny)
(I like the love that goes "boom"!)

Il n'avait plus que ses chaussettes
(he was only wearing his socks)
Des bell' jaunes avec des raies bleues
(nice yellow ones with blue stripes)
Il m'a regardé d'un œil bête
(he looked at me with a silly eye)
    Il comprenait rien, l'malheureux
(he understood nothing, the poor one)
Et il m'a dit l'air désolé
(he told me with a sorrowfull face)
    Je n'ferais pas d'mal à une mouche
(I woudn't hurt anyone not even a fly)
    Il m'énervait! Je l'ai giflé
(he was bugging my, i slapped him)
(and I squaeked with an angry face..)

    Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    (hurt me Johnny..)
Je n'suis pas une mouche... zoum!
    (I'm not a fly, zoom)
    Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
(I like the love that goes "boom"!)

    Voyant qu'il ne s'excitait guère
(seeing that he did not become horny)
    Je l'ai insulté sauvagement
    (I wildely insulted him)
J'y ai donné tous les noms d'la terre
(I called him all the names on Earth= I insulted him with all the bad existing words on Earth)
(and many more others less common)
    Ça l'a réveillé aussi sec
    (that wake him up abruptely)
(and he told me " come off it!")
(you really think I'm a dead loss?)
    J'vais t'en r'filer, d'la série noire
(I will give you some "serie noire" (=thriller))

Tu m'fais mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    (you're hurting me Johnny)
    Pas avec des pieds... zing!
    (No, not with feet.. zing)
Tu m'fais mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    (you're hurting me)
(I dont' like love that goes "bang")

Il a remis sa p'tite chemise
(he put on his little shirt)
(his li'l suit, his li'l shoes)
    Il est descendu l'escalier
    (I went down the stairs)
    En m'laissant une épaule démise
(letting me with a dislocated shoulder)
Pour des voyous de cette espèce
    (for thugs this type)
(it wasn't worth making an effort)
(Now I got bruises all over my buttocks)
Et plus jamais je ne dirai
(and I will never say again...)

    Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    Envole-moi au ciel... zoum!
    Fais-moi mal, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny

Well, it's not exactly Women's Lib propaganda...

Hi Here's my effort (for J'en ai marre de l'amour):

    Ça va comme ça
    That's enough thank you
Cette fois tout est fini, oui
This time it's all over, yes
    Ça va comme ça
    That's enough thank you
    Arrêtez la boucherie
    Stop the bloodshed
    Voulez-vous que je vous dise
Do you want me to tell you
    J'en ai marre de l'amour
    I'm sick of love
    Ça va comme ça
    That's enough thank you
    Laissez-moi changer d'air
Let me have a change of scene
    Laissez-moi ranger
    Let me put
    Mon cœur au frigidaire
My heart back in the fridge
Il a fait trop de bêtises
    It's committed too many follies
    J'en ai marre de l'amour
    I'm sick of love

Je vivais sage sans me tourmenter
I was living a sedate life without worry
Votre voltage a tout fait sauter
    Your electric charge caused explosions
    Toujours docile, j'allais m'adapter
Always docile, I was going to adapt
How easy it is, suddenly you're off again

J'en ai assez de votre blablabla
I've had enough of your blah blah blah
And of your kisses which smack of the movies (ie. play-acting I think)
    Même si ça vous scandalise
    However it may shock you
    J'en ai marre de l'amour
    I'm sick of love

Finie la fête, après ce coup-là
    Party's over, after this blow
Faudrait être bête pour remettre ça
I'd have to be crazy to get back up
I'm stopping but I have to admit
That if it worries me, then it's because of you

I loved you like one loves at 20
You don't understand these kind of feelings
    C'est ça qui me martyrise
    That's what torments me
    J'en ai marre de l'amour
    I'm sick of love

    Si c'est pas votre amour
    Unless it's your love

Hi Miranda. Hope you like these ones too - and good luck with your French!

    J'suis snob... J'suis snob
    I'm a snob... I'm a snob
It's about the only fault I can stomach
    Ça demande des mois d'turbin
    It requires months of toil
    C'est une vie de galérien
    It's the life of a galley-slave
Mais quand je sors avec Hildegarde
But when I go out with Hildegarde
    C'est toujours moi qu'on r'garde
It's always me that they're looking at
    J'suis snob... Foutrement snob
    I'm a snob... a frightful snob
    Tous mes amis le sont
All my friends are snobbish too
On est snobs et c'est bon
We're snobs and we know it

    Chemises d'organdi, chaussures de zébu
Organdie shirts, shoes made from zebu-hide
Cravate d'Italie et méchant complet vermoulu
A ruby on the finger...of your foot, not that one!
Pitch-black nails and a pretty litte handkerchief
And nip into the cafe to drink whisky galore
I don't have indigestion, nobody does that anymore
I've got an ulcer, it's less common and it's dearer

    J'suis snob... J'suis snob
    I'm a snob... I'm a snob
J'm'appelle Patrick, mais on dit Bob
My name's Patrick, but they call me Bob
    I go horse-riding every morning
    Car j'ador' l'odeur du crottin
Because I love the smell of fresh manure
Je ne fréquente que des baronnes
I only keep company with baronesses
    Aux noms comme des trombones
    With surnames like trombones
    J'suis snob... Excessivement snob
I'm a snob... an outrageous snob
    Et quand j'parle d'amour
And when I talk of love
C'est tout nu dans la cour
    It's stark-naked in the courtyard

On se réunit avec les amis
We get together with our friends
Tous les vendredis, pour faire des snobisme-parties
Every Friday, where we snob it up in style
Il y a du coca, on deteste ça
    There's coke, we hate that
And camambert which we eat with a teaspoon
    Mon appartement est vraiment charmant
    My apartment is truly charming
I heat it with diamonds, you couldn't wish for anything more smoking [fumant= smoky OR fantastic]
I had a TV, but found it tiresome
I've turned it round... from the back it's riveting

    J'suis snob... J'suis snob
    I'm snob... I'm a snob
    J'suis ravagé par ce microbe
I've been consumed by the bug
    J'ai des accidents en Jaguar
    I have accidents in Jaguars
I spend the month of August in the sack
    It's small details like that
Que l'on est snob ou pas
That make you a snob or not
J'suis snob...
I'm a snob... Even more snobbish than 5 minutes ago
    Et quand je serai mort
    And when I die
J'veux un suaire de chez Dior!
I want a shroud from chez Dior

    A CANNES CET ETE

    Quand vous recevrez
    When you receive
    Ce petit billet
    This little note
My dear, don't toss it in the waste basket
    Ma lettre vous invite
    My letter is inviting you
    A me suivre bien vite
    To come with me soon
    A Cannes
    To Cannes
    Pendant l'été
    In the summer

    Lorsque la Croisette
    When La Croisette
    En grande toilette
    In all its finery
Devant vous fera briller ses feux follets
Dazzles you with its dancing lights
    Je veux que votre épaule
    I want your shoulder
    Soit contre mon épaule
    To be against my shoulder
    A Cannes
    n Cannes
    Cet été
    This summer

So many stars on the ground and so many flowers in the sky
    Tout ça avec vous
    All that with you
    Ça me rendra fou
    It will drive me wild
Nous irons danser et nous irons traîner
We'll go and dance and we'll go and take it easy
En passant le temps à s'aimer
While passing the time making love

    Quand vous recevrez
    When you receive
    Ce petit billet
    This little note
Ma chérie, dites-moi que vous acceptez
My dire, tell me that you accept

    To come with me soon

Thanks for the words, I have been singing them non-stop!!! It certainly helps when you know what the words actually mean, and it helps immensely with my pronunciation.

"Johnny" is about the funniest thing I ever heard. Now I've found another three of four tunes sung by Juliette Greco, including an inspired take on Ne me quitte pas (at Odeon, 1999 ). Sounds like I need to hear Snob, but I might add that title also reminds me of Les Rita Mitsuko, (who I adore) and I hope to find more tongue-n-cheek material like it.

(Promise I won't sing along with any of these songs until I get a clue as to what they mean!) Also, wadda 'bout CocaRosie? She's as off the wall as Frank Zappa!!

    Thumbs up translating skillfully, amigo!

BirdMan has got this down to an art. I can see that song interpretation takes a looser sence of grammar and correctness than most language freaks have time to give it. Also, very few of us will ever get onstage and run through all of this professionally.

I hope to learn some basic French by participating here. They did not like my use of any auto-translators over at the french and english forum, so I quit after just a few weeks of trying. This is a far more interesting and vital approach for me personally, since I do like Pop, while I detest most of mainstream popular (top 40) so-called- culture.
