    Default Shakira - Hay Amores

Can you please translate these lyrics for me to English... it's from one of her new songs that she recorded for the movie Love in the Time of Cholera. Thanks!

Oh my love! I’d do anything for you
to have you for a second, far away from the world
    and close to me
Oh my love! Just like the Magdalena river
which merges into the sea sand,
I want to be one with you.

There are loves which become resistant to any damage,
just like wine improves its quality throughout the years,
in that same way my feelings for you grow ever stronger

There are loves which wait for the winter to bloom
and in the autumn evenings turn green again,
just like the love I feel for you.

Oh my love! Don’t forget the sea,
which has seen me crying at night
over all those memories I’ve got of you
Oh my love! Don’t forget the day
    which separated your life
from this poor life of mine

There are loves which become resistant to any damage,
just like wine improves its quality throughout the years,
in that same way my feelings for you grow ever stronger

There are loves which seem to reach an end but then bloom
and in the autumn evenings turn green again,
just like the love I feel for you
I feel for you.. for you.. like the love I feel for you.

I think citlalli's translation added words that didn't necessarily belong as they weren't part of the original lyrics. There were other parts I simply didn't agree with.

    Here's a cleaned up translation:
Oh my love*! There's nothing I wouldn't do for you
to have you for a second, far away from the world
    and close to me
Oh my love! Just like the Magdalena river
which melts into the sand of the sea,
I want to melt with you.

There are loves which become resistant to damage,
just like wine improves through the years,
that's how my feelings for you grow.

There are loves which wait for winter and bloom
and in the autumn evenings turn green again,
just like the love I feel for you.

Oh my love! Don’t forget the sea,
which has seen me crying at night
    so many memories of you.
Oh my love! Don’t forget the day
    which separated your life
from this poor life that I had to live.

There are loves which become resistant to damage,
just like wine improves through the years,
that's how my feelings for you grow.

There are loves which seem to end and bloom
and in the autumn evenings turn green again,
just like the love I feel for you
I feel for you.. for you.. like the love I feel for you.

*"bien" was translated into "love" although it is not literal. "Bien" is used here as a term of endearment but literally means "good."

    Default Beautiful Spanish

Oh! My wellbeing, what I would not do for you,
To have you for a moment, far from the world
    And close to me

Oh! My wellbeing, as the Magdalena river
Renders itself into the sand of the sea
So I wish to render myself into you

There are loves that become impervious to pain,
And just as wine improves with the years,
So grows what I feel for you

There are loves that await the winter and flower
And in the autumn nights are reborn
Just as the love I have for you

Oh! My wellbeing, do not forget the sea,
Who in the evenings has seen me cry,
    So many memories of you.

Oh! My wellbeing, do not forget the day
    That separated your life
From the wretched life that was my lot to live.

There are loves that become impervious to pain,
And just as wine improves with the years,
So grows what I feel for you,

There are loves that seem to end and flower
And in the autumn nights are reborn
Just as the love I feel for you
I for you, for you, as the love I feel for you.

    Actually the beginning starts as,
    "Oh, my dear,
What i wouldn't do for you,
For having you one second, away from this world,
    and closer to me.

    & it's not
    "there are loves"
    it's
    "there are relationships"

I could do the rest but i can't be bothered lol.

And i'm half Spanish and half English so please don't try correcting me.

Hmmm - Ok - I will not try to correct you - but you are of course wrong - amores as relationships!!? Oh Please!- Mi bien is not my dear - my dear would be mi querido(a), mi amor = my love - literally it is “my good” -
In actuality, any attempt to translate the nuances and beauty of Spanish poetry/prose will fall short - just as it happens with translations of any beautiful use of language; the nature of the beast.

Oh! My good, what I wouldn't do for you
To have you a second, far away of the world
and a little closer to me
Oh! My good, like the river Magdalene
That it founds (personification) in the sand of the sea
I want to fuse myself in you

There are loves that return themselves resistant to the pains
Like the wine that betters with the years
Thus what I feel for you grows

There are loves that themselves wait in the winter and they bloom
in the nights of the autumn turn green again
Such like the love that I feel for you

Oh! My good, do not forget the sea
that in the nights you have seen me cry
    so much memories of you
Oh! My good do not forget of the day
that I separated in your life
of the poor life that I must live

There are loves resistant even the pains
like the wine that betters with the years
Like so grows what I feel for you
There are loves that appear finished and bloom

and in the nights of autumn turn green again
Such like the love I feel for you
I for you, I for you, for you, like the love that I feel for you

    Ok

whoa! this turned into a translators fight... (this forum keeps getting better and better... hehe)

I will not try to correct anyone, since (most of) the translations were correct. There's not one single way to translate a passage since we can find different synonyms for each word.

My "side of the story"? Only three things to point out:
    1) "mi bien" lit. means "my good" in this case, it is a term of endearment so you could replace that with "my love" or something similar. Connotation implies, "mi bien" = what makes me feel good, you are "my wellbeing"
    2) "loves" lit. means "amores", in this case I don't know if "relationships" quite does it since relationships may include friends, relatives, acquaintances and in this case only refers to "romantic" kind of love.
    3) some of the verses, in my opinion, should read as follows:
    * "qué no haría yo por ti" = "what wouldn't I do for you"
    * "así crece lo que siento yo por ti" = "(more verbatim) that's how what I feel for you grows" or "(sounds better) that's how my feelings for you grow"
    * "tal como el amor que siento yo por ti" = "such as the love that I feel for you"
    * "de la pobre vida que me tocó vivir" = "of the poor life that I was bound to live"

Hope this helps amirican! But everyone was right in their own way, so you pretty much got the meaning of the song I guess... (which was the whole point of this, right?)
