rica ederim. (a common reply to thanks, meaning something like "don't mention it")

one thing i forgot to mention: yes, indeed, elif is the first letter of arabic (and ottoman) alphabeth (greek alpha, hebrew aleph). since it resembles arabic numeral one, or 1 without the strokes, in sufi tradition it's regarded as a symbol of god's unity, and thus, of god himself. yunus emre, the turkish mystic poet, says,

    dört kitabın manası
    bellidir bir elifte
    sen elifi bilmezsin
    bu nice okumaktır?

    yirmi dokuz hece
    okursun uçtan uca
    sen elif dersin hoca
    manası ne demektir? (*)

    which means

the meaning of the four books (ie, the old and the new testaments, the book of psalms and the quran)
    is evident in an elif
    you don't know the elif
what sort of study is this?

twenty nine syllables (ie, letters of the alphabeth)
you read from end to end
    you say elif, o scholar!
    what does it mean?

karacaoğlan, the famous turkish minstrel (ozan), apparently had a sweetheart whose name was elif. one of his wellknown poems about elif is below:

    İncecikten bir kar yağar
    Tozar Elif Elif diye
    Deli gönül abdal olmuş
    Gezer Elif Elif diye

    Elif'in uğru nakışlı
    Yavru balaban bakışlı
    Yayla çiçeği kokuşlu
    Kokar Elif Elif diye

    Elif kaşlarını çatar
    Gamzesi sineme batar
    Ak elleri kalem tutar
    Yazar Elif Elif diye

    Evlerinin önü çardak
    Elif'in elinde bardak
    Sanki yeşil başlı ördek
    Yüzer Elif Elif diye

    Karac'oğlan eğmelerin
    Gönül vermez değmelerin
    İliklemiş düğmelerin
    Çözer Elif Elif diye

(*) this sentence is grammatically malformed. the correct form should have been "manası nedir?" or "elif ne demektir?"

you are right: kitap was borrowed from arabic, along with a number of its derivatives. in general, it means a book, any book. in turkish, we don't have a special word that both means book and exclusively refers to the quran, like "the bible." it's inferred from the context whether it refers to the quran or not.

    some contexts are as follows:

when someone say another "kitapsız!" meaning "without book or bookless," it's an insult, if not among friends, implying "you have no faith in the quran."

"allahıma, kitabıma," literally, "to my god, to my book" is an oath, meaning "by my god, by my book."

"kitaba el basmak," literally "to press hand on the book," is to swear by placing one's hand on the quran. (caution: this is just an idiom, not a common or usual practice. no one actually places his/her hand on the quran when [s]he swears. i've never seen anybody doing it apart from the movies.)

"dört kitap=the four books" is almost always the four religious books (among muslims, as you might have already known it, the book of psalms is considered a separate book).

as barış manço says in his song "benden öte=beyond me"

Dört kitaptan başlayalım istersen gel söze
Orda öyle bir isim var ki kuldan öte kuldan ziyade
Onu düşün ona sığın o senden öte benden ziyade

come, let's begin talking with the four books if you wish
there's a name there that's beyond man, more than man (*)
think of him, seek refuge to him, he is beyond you, more than me

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho60b_WJ4bs

(*) man: original word is "kul," arabic "3abd" as in "3abd allah," but english lacks such a word that describes man's status before god.
