In romanian lumea means the world.

In expressions where in english you use "people" we use "lumea".

"The people are talking" we usually say " Lumea vorbește"

The translation for people is oamenii and we also use "Oamenii vorbesc" but the use of "lumea" is much more spread in expressions like this.

What will people say? (someone worried about the others' opinion may ask this) we say it: Ce-o să zică lumea?
