sorry for not answerin yesterday....
i was livin in texas for the vacations, and well, there was this hurricane so things were a lil complicated i drove back to mex and didnt had time to get online :S

i do think there are some differences, but im not quite expert on that...
we have mariachi y ranchero (here we have vicente fernandez)...which is very strong all over the country, but norteño (mmm, tigres del norte), tex-mex (intocable) are more popular on the north part....and i think maybe corridos and huapangos are more popular in the south...i really dont know about south that much :S -

... I'm not an expert either, but I think music from the north part of the country -what the girls already mentioned, like norteño and banda- is very strong all over Mexico, and the same happens of course with ranchero and mariachi (although at least in the centre we always relate it more to places like Jalisco and Guanajuato).
On the gulf side the typical music is jarocho and huapango. In places like Veracruz ppl also enjoy dancing to danzón. I remember having attended to a couple of popular shows while in Mérida, and the music sounded very jarocho-style to me (with a heavy harp and jarana sound).
