Ok, here's a strange coincidence: Wal-Mart had a (new?) Vicente Fernandez music DVD on display today, on the 'end-cap', and I almost bought it. But I'm not making a lot of money right now, so it'll have to wait. But I've got a big job tomorrow ...

so ok, maybe I'll do just one or two of his songs ....... how about Volver Volver? Isn't that everyone's favorite?

May I ask? ... I used to notice distinctions (musical differences?) between 'el sur' and 'el norte', I think. Is there a major difference, in general? Like maybe in the U.S. ... country music is more popular in the South, Southwest, and West ... not including L.A. ... but Jazz is generally more popular in the Northeast, or Chicago, or only in certain cities in other places. Of course a lot of people like a lot of different styles. But, are there general divisions like that, in taste or style, in Mexico?

.....vamonos guajira .... (I'm warming up my voice ...
    ...vamos a bailar
...vamonos guajira ..... (you can sing with me ...
    ...vamos a bailar

    Que lo que quiere quajira
    s itu queires bailar

    ben be len be ...

    y vamos a gozar ....

I looooooove that song!!! =))))) (edit: ... I love the CD/studio version, it's a lot better than the video)

i do think there are some differences, but im not quite expert on that...
we have mariachi y ranchero (here we have vicente fernandez)...which is very strong all over the country, but norteño (mmm, tigres del norte), tex-mex (intocable) are more popular on the north part....and i think maybe corridos and huapangos are more popular in the south...i really dont know about south that much :S

Okay Santana's lover ... I'm not an expert either, but I think music from the north part of the country -what the girls already mentioned, like norteño and banda- is very strong all over Mexico, and the same happens of course with ranchero and mariachi (although at least in the centre we always relate it more to places like Jalisco and Guanajuato).

On the gulf side the typical music is jarocho and huapango. In places like Veracruz ppl also enjoy dancing to danzón. I remember having attended to a couple of popular shows while in Mérida, and the music sounded very jarocho-style to me (with a heavy harp and jarana sound).

Here are some videos u may enjoy:

I really like a LOT of the links that all of you have shared! Gracias, muchisimo =)))

I found some "new" stuff ... well actually, old stuff, but anyway ....

One of my most favorite songs by Tish Hinojosa, La Lloróna. Nobody can sing this song like her, but of course she wrote it (I think):

Two fantastic versions of the oh-so-beautiful Malagueña:

    José Feliciano

Carlos Montoya ... excuse me, SEÑOR Montoya
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJfi7...eature=related

y José otra vez, y Carlos Santana ... permanentemente "Mr. Cool" ... y Ricky Martin: Light My Fire / Guajira / Oye Como Va

Ana, it seems like we've invaded your "home" and we refuse to leave??? .... maybe we need to find another topic to take over and destroy!!...

but you know I always have more to say about brotha Carlos! ... but if you don't mind, I wanna borrow the "smooth" video as a reply in the Music > Music General > SANTA vs. SANTANA thread....

    thanks again!

Mmhhh... u really made me stop and think: "who wrote La llorona? I don't know!" So I gave myself to researching in wikipedia and according to them, the author is unknown and it's a very old song from Oaxaca (southern Mexico). Here's the link (only available in spanish, sorry ):

    http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Llorona_(m%C3%BAsica)

And I think that Hinojosa's version is good, but my favourite one is still Raphael's -it must be coz I very much prefer male voices, and I think he's got an amazingly powerful voice- just in case u haven't heard it yet:
