Lyrics from me for this great song by Yiannis Kotsiras
I have made a translation, but did struggle a bit with the last verse. Any corrections will be welcomed !
Ένα βράδυ που 'βρεχε
One night when it rained
Ένα βράδυ που βρεχε που βρεχε μονότονα
one night when it rained, when it rained constantly
έφυγες αγάπη μου
you left my love
ποιος σε πήρε να ξερα
who took you I dont know
και θα τον εσκότωνα
and I will kill him
ένα βράδυ που βρεχε που βρεχε μονότονα
one night when it rained, when it rained constantly
Ένα βράδυ που βρεχε μέχρι το ξημέρωμα
one night when it rained until daybreak
έφυγες αγάπη μου
you left my love
αχ αυτός ο άτιμος
ach, the disgrace of that
ήθελε μαχαίρωμα
he (she?) wanted stabbing
ένα βράδυ που βρεχε μέχρι το ξημέρωμα
one night when it rained until daybreak
Ένα βράδυ που βρεχε μέχρι που εχάραξε
one night when it rained until day broke
έφυγες αγάπη μου
you left my love
η καρδιά μου σκίστηκε
my heart ripped apart
η καρδιά μου σπάραξε
my heart was torn
ένα βράδυ που βρεχε μέχρι που εχάραξε
one night when it rained until day broke

Ένα βράδυ που βρεχε μέχρι που εχάραξε
one night that was raining till the day brake
Only this one......
"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"
Thanks Amethystos.. is that the same as ξημέρωμα then ?
Noun Αυγή - Χαραυγή = day brake
Verb Χαράζω or χαράσσω = "scratch", but in 3rd person only, it also mean "dawn"
So the answer is:"yes, it's the same as "ξημέρωμα" but only when you see it written in 3rd person"
"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"
Thanks for the explanation Amethystos. It just goes to show that you can never learn Greek just by consulting the dictionary
I'll edit the translation, I assume that it would be 'until the day broke' being past tense, do you think?
