I'll begin this topic with a salute to one great Hawaiian musician. But he was much, much more than a great musician. For anyone else who knows of his music, or who will discover it now, maybe we won't even let this topic go anywhere else .....

I was reminded in another topic about how much I love the music of Israel Kamakawiwi'ole. He passed away in 1997. He seemed to be a truly beautiful person ..... it is so sad that he's no longer with us ......

    From wikipedia:

"Kamakawiwo'ole was nicknamed 'The Gentle Giant' by his admirers. He was described as always cheerful and positive, and he was best known for his love of the land and of the people of Hawaii."

I don't know more than 2-3 words of the Hawaiian language. But when I listen to Iz, I don't feel that I need to understand the words. It seems like his music pours itself into the heart, or it just creates a nice feeling. If you don't believe me, or if you don't know about the great Iz, just feel it for yourself ....

This one just might break you down .......

So now I'll be very interested to find out how many other people appreciate Bruddah IZ, or any other notable Hawaiian musician!

Maybe I should define the topic a little more? Anything relating to Hawaiian music, Hawaiian performers, or non-Hawaiian musicians/groups who perform Hawaiian music? ... and other music that is closely related to Hawaiian ... new music, old music, Hawaiian songs/lyrics that someone has written ..... anything that allows us to enjoy and appreciate the musical genre of "Hawaiian", and even the language itself.

Yes, I saw that not long ago. Her voice is amazing! And singing a cappella!! And she's soooooo cute and so sweet, a little princess It was just incredible, and even Simon was a little unbelievable .....

When I first found the video of this Hawaiian man, Iz, singing Over the Rainbow, I thought, ah it's just gonna be Andy Williams or somebody like that, all over again ... but it's amazing how some people can make an old song sound so fresh!

Traditional Hawaiian music and dance was functional, used to express praise, communicate genealogy and mythology and accompany games, festivals and other secular events.

Some kinds of chants express emotions like angst and affection, or request a favor from another person.

I will try to take hawaiian's dance class soon

Interesting dance and nice rhythm, I like the drums. I have a couple of mp3's with strong drums, but I can't find any good videos yet.

edit: Good luck with the lessons!

Maybe Iz (the guy in all of my links so far) was the very best? And maybe it was because he had so much love for Hawaii and for the music .....
