Yes, it sounds better to express duration:
There is an important difference between Spanish and English in the use of the past simple and past continuous tenses. When an action happened regularly or repeatedly in the past, we use the past continuous tense (pretérito imperfecto), not the past simple as in English.

or the difference between "conmigo" and "con mijo"?
or "te" and "ti"?
or "gustaria" and "justaria"

is it just different ways of saying the words? or is it on dialect / spelling from different locations?

how would i say
"i had plans for a christmas & birthday surprise for you, but since....i have forgotten"
would i be
