... To be the origin of "rebetis", I mean.

Rebel- cannot turn into rebet-, purely for linguistic reasons.

The noun "rebelos" (and the verb "rebelevo" respectively) is a loan word that entered into Greek during the Venetokratia.

I'd like to share an article about a group TATAVLA; whose members are Greek, Turkish, French and Canadian of Armenian background.

I think that rebetes-rebetiko comes from the Turkish word rebet, and the correct explanation would be the one Koukla gave, against authority. That is what they thought of themselves originally at least.

Tatavla used to be a village outside Istanbul, mentioned in many Greek songs(some considered folk). One of them says "sta Tatavla tha pio krasi", so most probably the article is true about Tatavla being the place for having fun back then.
From what I know though, the first rebetika songs had nothing to do with diaspora (which I think they intend immigration, diaspora are the Greeks abroad, immigration is ksenitia),they had to do with drugs, police(zaptiedes as mentioned in many songs), and love affairs (legal and especially illegal ones). Round the 30's we can talk about rebetiko that talks about ksenitia, that was the decade that way too many Greeks migrated for the Americas (not only the US, Germany and Australia came later after WW2).

It could have worked, but... The only problem about this theory is that there is no actual Turkish word "rebet".
Except for the combination of words "rebet asker", that is, but it comes from the Arabic "ribat" and "askari". This is the reason why no dictionary gives a certain etymology. Аll we can do is make hypotheses.

Btw guys, I was in the SOAS Rebetiko Band concert on Sunday night. It was awesome, they have a Istalbul-Athens-Hydra tour.

The group consists of Greeks, Turks, Cypriots and Brits. They are London-based and about 24 people....that I counted

what a nice flow of information on rebets, i'm really impressed. and to include, the book "road to rembetika:music of a greek sub-culture" by gail holst is a wonderful book on rebets, for other interesting details.
i have a piece of news for those of you in thessalonica and athens. for the theatre festival in greece, an awesome group of actors and actresses from turkish state theaters will be on stage with the famous play "rembetiko" by costas ferris from october 16th to october 19th, both in thessalonica and athens. believe me or not, it is highly appreciated by various theatre critics, and as a person having seen the play, i advise you also to see it for yourselves if you have the chance , i hope you'll enjoy. thanks

by the way i've just finished watching the documentary whose links ray has given. that's a great deal, a good general source for the people wondering about rebets. and hearing arvanitaki sing in all her beauty is a plus is there any other documentary you can recommend on rebetiko, or the history of greek music in general? and lastly, history is a weird concept, especially when we think of the 80's as a new phenomenon nowadays, the documentary brings two phenomena together
