Smile Roberto Carlos - Esta Tarde Vi Llover

Hi. Could you help me with the translation of this beautiful song into English?
Specially expressions like "vi llover", "la otra noche" and some other. Thanks!

    Esta tarde vi llover
    Vi gente correr
    Y no estabas tu.

    La otra noche vi brillar
    Un lucero azul
    Y no estabas tu.

    La otra tarde
    vi que un ave enamorada
Daba besos a su amor ilusionada.
    y no estabas.

    El otoño vi llegar
    Al mar oi cantar
    Y no estabas tu.

Yo no se cuanto me quieres
Si me extrañas o me engañas.

    Solo se que vi llover
    Vi gente correr
    Y no estabas tu.

This afternoon I saw the rain
    saw people running
    and you weren't there

The other night I saw shining
    of a bright blue star
    and you weren't there

    The other afternoon
I saw that a bird in love
    was kissing its illusory love
    and you weren't there

    I saw autumn coming
    I heard sea singing
    and you weren't there

I don't know how much you love me
Do you miss me or you're cheating on me

I only know I saw the rain
    saw people running
    and you weren't there
    Aconteceu
    Estava escrito assim
Eu em você, você em mim
    Eu te encontrei
    Meu grande amor..

"vi llover" is kind of a tricky thing to translate. I literally means "I saw the rain fall down from the sky" or "I watched while it rained" or "I watched raining". In Spanish "lluvia" is rain (a noun) but "llover" is a verb, like "raining".

You could say "Vi llover" means "I saw raining" but that's not the way we say it in English. You would say "I saw rain" but that doesn't necessarily mean you sat there and watched it rain.

Sorry.... I think too much! Adrienne, you did a great job here... I just had to jump in with my random thoughts!

No, the way you did it was BEAUTIFUL! I wasn't trying to correct you at all. A good translator, especially for songs, translates the intended meaning. I just know people are also trying to learn the language and so I just added my thoughts here.

I don't think any of us could've done a better job with this song. Thanks!

No, suggestions are always welcome, so if you have any please do tell... I never translate it literally, it can sound awful at times... And I'm sure there are many people in here (native speakers of spanish language) who would have done it 1000 times better but hey.. (:

thank you, and once again: I'd be grateful if you'd give all suggestions you have, everything that's on your mind. Thank you!

    best regards,

    Adrienne

    Hej guys,

    Just a few comments here:

    - trajano, the song is by the great Armando Manzanero!! Roberto Carlos just made his version of it, as many others did (como el mítico trío Los Panchos).

    - Adrienne, your translation is more or less OK, but there is one mistake: "su amor ilusionada" does not translate as "its illusory love". Watch out with false friends: "ilusionarse" and thus "estar ilusionado" means to be looking forward to something, to be very happy about something! ;-)

    Cheers!

That is a really interesting translation. Very different from the english lyrics the song was given.

I know this is an old post and the people that contributed may no longer be around, but I'm wondering if it's possible to give a phonetic version of the spanish words? I can't speak spanish but would love to be able to sing the original words.

Hi RisusSardonicus, I think that spanish is so easy to follow, almost all the letters can be figured out, I´d like to ask you to listen the song using the lyrics, and if you have some problems just tell us and will give you any help we can.
This are some places you can find the song in two versions with Roberto Carlos or the original, the mexican composer Armando Manzanero. The last one I don´t know whose the lady, but it has the lyrics along the video. Hope you can make it and enjoy this beautiful and romantic song.

This is the Spanish rendition of a song made popular by Perry Como and Tony Bennet as well entitled "Yesterday I Heard The Rain..." vi Llover is figuratively translated as " I heard the rain," and la otra noche is literally translated as "the other other night..."

    "Yesterday I Heard The Rain"

    Yesterday I heard the rain
    Whispering your name
    Asking where you’d gone

It fell softly from the clouds
    On the silent crowds
    As I walked alone

    Out of doorways black umbrellas
    Came to pursue me
    Faceless people as they passed
    Were looking through me
    No one knew me

    Yesterday I shut my eyes
    Face up to the skies
    Drinking in the rain

But your image still was there
    Floating in the air
    Brighter than a flame

    Yesterday I saw a city
    Full of shadows without pity
And I heard the steady rain
    Whispering your name
    Whispering your name
