translating folklore songs is not easy..i've done my best..if you don't understand something write and i'll make it clear here you go...




Заблеяло ми агънце,
a lamb started baaing ( baaing is the word for the sound a lamb makes )
в Тодорови кошари,
in Todorovis sheep pen (the place that the lambs stay) (famili name Todorovi)
като му агне забляло,
when his lamb started baaing
цяло му стадо разбляло.
the whole herd started baaing
Тодор на агне продума,
Todor spoko to his lamb
агънце, байно, рогато,
lamb,white,horned
защо тъй жално заблея
why did you start baaing so mornfully
та ми стадото разблея.
that you made my whole herd baaing
Дал не ти трева зелена,
isn't your grass green
ил не ти зобта достига,
or isn't the grain enough
агънце Тодор продума ,
the lamb spoke to Todor
байноле бати, Тодоре,
(байноле бати an old word for a elder brother) Todore
къде е моята майка.

Тодор на агне продума,
Todor spoke to his lamb
агънце байно рогато,
uncles horned lamb
таз сутрин рано в неделя,
early this morning in Sunday
дойдоха трима търговци,
came three tradesman
шепа алтъни дадоха,
they gave a handfull of Altini (money)
Рогуша на тях продадох.
i sold Rogusha to them (Rogusha- name of the mother lamb)
Агънце жално продума,
the lamb spoke mournfully
помниш ли бати Тодоре,
do you remember, (бати-elder brother) Todore
когато Струма придойде,
when Struma (lake in BG) rised
синджир мостове носеше,
chain bridges carried away
твоето стадо шарено ,
your herd many-coloured
отвътре като остана.
when stayed within (inside)
Ти покрай бряга ходеше ,
you walked around the shore
жално си милно плачеше,
and cryed sad and mornfully
моята майка Рогуша ,
my mother Rogusha
тя ти стадото изведе.
she lead out your herd
Помниш ли какво обеща,
do you remember what you promissed
каква ти беше думата,
what where your words
рогата ша и позлатиш ,
that you will make her horns golden
краката ша и посребря,
her hoof -silver
защо я, байно, продаде,
why did you ,uncle, sell her
на тези върли касапи.
to those butchers
Тодор се жално нажали,
Todor started feeling sad
с медян си кавал засвири,
started playing his pipe
( in bg has a strong meaning...like he playes the instrument very very good)
като с кавала свиреше,
when he was playing his pipe
сълзи му кавал обляха.
the tears where flooding his pipe (makeing the pipe wet)

what you might not get from the translation is why the mother lamb is so importend to Todor..one day a river flooded the herd and Todor could do nothing to save the herd which where his sorse of food (milk) and clothes (from the wool) but the sheep Rogusha led the herd to the shore and to Todor thats why she is important
