80's song American female singer

OK for the past god knows how many years i have been trying to find the name and artist of a particular song, hopefully i have come to the right place to finally get the answer.
All i can remember is, it was out there in the 80's, sung by a female who i would be assuming is black American, a very soulful voice, the lyrics are very limited i'm afraid, and i have checked on google but to no avail.

Back in the day Radio 1, Robbie Vincent on a Sunday night used to play some of the rare US stuff here in the UK, i heard it on his show, taped it and lost it!!

I don't know the exact answer but I remember Tina Turner doing something about driving down the road, highway, street or BLVD. Maybe it will help.
