Well these lyrics were written by Mano Eleftheriou.
So it's pretty difficult to translate them but I'll give it a try.

    Song: "Stwn aggelwn ta mpouzoukia"
    Music:Christo Nikolopoulos
    Poetry:Mano Eleftheriou
Sung by: Michali Dimitriadis & Eleni Tsaligopoulou
    LP: Ximeroma protis Ianouariou 2000 M.X. (05/04/1993 by Sony-BMG)
    Track no: 03

Some night-time friends of ours, called as tramps
and watch us and salute us from the skies
they come in the dark like thieves
they play and feel pain and sing to us
their memories which human mind cannot approach

Let's go to the bouzoukia of angels
which remind the days of Byzantium
throw away your known black dresses
and put in your soul, human voices

At nights some strangers, for years lifetimers
they gospel some songs nowadays holly ones
at heaven's gate like security soldiers
    their songs and their touch
sing us their songs and silently cry

Let's go to the bouzoukia of angels
which remind the days of Byzantium

    ...

their passions which human mind cannot approach

    want to listen to Bouzoukia

"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"

Well, Amethystos, I have to say that I think you did very well with some magnificent but very difficult lyrics.

Just this past year (Feb 2014), almost five years after your translation here, an excellent short biographical sketch of Nikolopoulos was published here:

    https://greeksongstories.wordpress.c...-golden-music/

and at the end of this biographical sketch there is a little synopsis of the song and a link to this youtube clip:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0S_e7qhdD4

This clip has running English subtitles which are very close to your translation, and also help to clarify the meaning of Eleftheriou's lyrics.

When dealing with lyrics such as these, which are actually not just lyrics but also great poetry, it is always better to have as many translations as possible, because each translator understands something better than the others, and from all of the translations together, we can form the best idea of the original.

Yes it's true. But the effect gets a x2 magnification when it comes to poets like Eleftheriou who likes to write using puzzles.
