Does the letter "t" inserted between "a" and "il" work as something to harmonize the pronunciation ? I mean to avoid two vowels being set next to each other )))

The -t- in French is something of a grammatical nature, which can't really be logically explained... It's partly because of pronunciation, but it's really because of no better reason than the fact that it's learnt to be always there... Like I said, no logic

Maybe someone else can explain better.

Does "Ce sont des Français" make sense ? Why not "Ils sont" ?

@ Helene: That would mean "These are Frenchmen" or something like that... Wouldn't you say "ils sont"? enchantée aussi

Voici mon avis... Je ne connais pas de règle à ce propos, je dis donc juste ce que je pense
I prefer telling you in French ; if it's not enough just tell me

"Ce sont des Français" makes sense.
Mais on pourrait dire aussi : "Ils sont français", c'est juste une question de nuance

Exemples :

"- Qui sont ces gens ?
- Ce sont des Français, je n'en sais pas plus..."

"- Quelle est la nationalité de ces gens ?
- Ils sont français."

Je ne dirais pas "Ils sont des Français", tout comme je dirais plutôt "C'est mon ami" que "Il est mon ami", mais je ne peux pas vous dire pourquoi :/ Désolée. Peut-être que quelqu'un connaît une règle à ce sujet ?
