    Default Lilienthal - "Heio"

    Hi, everybody:

Can somebody translate me this folk song to english?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrCdhkgrM2M

I think it is written in and old german and sorry i don't find the lyric anywhere because it was hard to get this lp for me. If somebody want to try it, i hope that doesn't have many difficults to listen to this and take the original text.
Many thanks, i would like to know what it says, it's very special for me.

I'm German, but I hardly understand it and I can only figure out a few words. Sorry.
It is a) "old" German or b) a strange dialect of a special region in Germany.

I searched the internet a bit and sadly the lyrics are not available there. Maybe someone understands this... I don't.

Nope, it's pretty incomprehensible. I gave Corvus an adress where there's a little chance to get the lyrics but I doubt that it will work out. With the lyrics written down we might be able to do it we've worked ourselves through the hardest Swiss German, it can't be that hard to get the meaning of this one!

    Der Jüngling ................... eine Jungfrau....
bald... Kein Fremder kann sien (=sein) / kennt sie (?)

    ... I gave her (?)
    ... oktovier (oktober?)

    HEIO on ....... oktovier

De Jungfrau sprach (?) zum Jüngling
ich wollte kein Fremder kennt sie
    möchte Mannes......
    in .... Regenwolken/ Walde blieben (=bleiben)

    Heio, die Regenwolken blieben (?)

....... my live live....... ins Bett (?)
    live will be.......

Heio live will be leben blieben

This is a real challenge; i listened and I have tried as hard as I could. Some words remind me on plattdeutsch (very very north of Germany) which are live and tide, which I mean I have recognized them right: live = leben and tide = ZEIT.
I have once seen a documentation on TV where they described the change of german language during the time. Maybe they sind in a northern german dialect the way they used to speak 400 or 500 years ago.
MAybe someone can listen to this song again and maybe we can find it out together.
At least the things I have heard are more gaps than lyrics

    See you, Tahira

The first stanza is about him getting to know the girl and courting her for sure The basic theme is clear, but I can't actually write down what I hear. The second stanza says that she shares his feelings.

Ummm ... and maybe the third one about enjoying the moment, not living always in expectation of what might be ahead ...?

Let me try to write the first stanza in today's style

Der Jüngling sprach eine schöne Jungfrau an
    Wollte kein Fremder mehr sein
    Er gab ihr ... Blumen
    Man nennt ihn ...

    Die Jungfrau sprach zum Jüngling
Ich wollte keine Fremde mehr sein
    Möchte ... sehn (Männer! )
    ...

I don't see the rain clouds in here ... and not the forest either, though it would suit the general theme in songs of that time. Though that is a possibility if one of the "Möchte ... sein" words is Gestade, which always hear when listening to it.

The famous line could also be "Ich wollt ich könnt die Fremde sehen" but then my flowers don't make sense anymore but both lines in the first and second stanza sound too much alike to mean "Wollt kein Fremder ..." in the first one, "Ich wollte ich könnt ..." in the second.

My try for stanza 1 and 2 (I suppose it's medieval, maybe mittelhochdeutsch):

De jüngling sprak: schön jungfrau fin,
Der Jüngling sprach: schöne Jungfrau fein,
The youngling spoke: you beautiful and fine maid
    Wollt du min frünneken sin?
    Willst Du meine Frau sein?
Do you want to be my wife?
Ick geve dir die blümelin (?),
    Ich gebe dir die Blümelein,
    I give you the flowers,
und nem di ok to webe.
und nehm dich auch zum Weibe.
and also take you to be my wife.
Heio, un nem di ok to webe.
Heio, und nehm dich auch zum Weibe.
Heio, and also take you to be my wife.

    De jungfrau sprak: schön jüngeling
    Die Jungfrau sprach: schöner Jüngling
The maid spoke: you handsome youngling
    Ik wollt din frünneken sin.
    Ich will deine Frau sein.
I want to be your wife.
    möchte mannes ... (geschmeide?) sin
    möchte Mannes ... (Geschmeide?) sein
want to be the man's ... (jewelry?)
    Din eigen wollt ik blibn.
    Dein eigen will ich bleiben.
I want to stay your own.
Heio, din eign wollt ik blibn.
Heio, Dein eigen will ich bleiben.
Heio, I want to stay your own.

3rd stanza seems to be dealing with the life together then (I agree there's a lot of life and time in the lyrics), but I wasn't able to pick up any distinctive words yet. Any suggestions are welcome!

Wow, Nahnou, that´s great what you found out.

I also thought about mittelhochdeutsch, but than I got confused with live and tide which is still used in the plattdeutsch.

Nevertheless great what you and Steena found out.

    indeed amazing

(Steena's flowers could fit in here, what is the word you're hearing?)
    The word is "Blümelin"

Do I think that the second part of the third stanza is something along the lines of "and if I might give you an advice, don't hesitate but live your life"
