most things were as plain as day


uns're Mutter war die Beste
unser Vater war ein Star.
Beide hatten mit den eig'nen Händen Deutschland aufgebaut

Both had with their own hands rebuilt Germany


und das wurde dann von Gastarbeitern Stück für Stück versaut.

Because at the end of every month stands the bold/fat black number

In den Mehrzweckhallen ahnt man: Es hat alles keinen Zweck!

And she gets now actually her cowboy as a man
In the multipurpose hall one senses: it serves no purpose
The ministers in the empty churches wish themselves far away


unser Kanzler braucht Soldaten
weiß von nichts und wird verklagt

Our chancellor needs soldiers
knows nothing and is sued


unser Deo und der ganze alte Zauber hat versagt!

Our deodorant and all the old charm has failed

Auf Kosten weit Entfernter
gut genährt und gut gelaunt!

well fed and in a good mood

*Beckenbauer – a German football (soccer) player & coach
*Brandt - I'm guessing Chancellor Willie Brandt

Beide hatten mit den eig'nen Händen Deutschland aufgebaut
Both had with their own hands built Germany
Since this takes refrence to the war and the destruction I guess, I'd add an "up" to build or even rebuild

der Beckenbauer mag.
Was only the one true friend for us possibly Beckenbauer *

Doch sein kleines bißchen Feuer wurde ziemlich schnell erstickt

This way I think it's OK though a strange way to put it

Heute wird in unser'n Reihen junges Deutschland nachgebor'n
Today young Germany becomes posthumous in our ranks
Not sure if that was, what they wanted to say, I'd simply had used "reborn"

Auf Kosten weit Entfernter
At a cost far removed persons

und die Nächte werden kalt!
and the become cold!

Whew! this one was really tough. Way over my level of knowledge, but an opportunity to learn. I even considered not finishing it the further I went into it. But it's not in me to give up easily. I have a question, perhaps you can help me with.

I know about "die Nase voll haben" = "to have had enough"

In the above line "Plötzlich wehte um die Nase" I'm not familiar with the English equivalent. Would it be like (something coming to your attention) or ( something arriving on the scene)?

Well, you put it just right. There's no commonly used saying in this line, it wants to express that the air smelled of change, that a new wind was blowing which was about to change things.
