Default Annett - Ich komme heim

    Hello
    Posted for correction Thanks Luvya
Sorry no link to listen - new CD

    Annett - Ich komme heim
    I'll come home

    Sirenen heulen, nachts Alarm,
macht schon macht schon macht hin lauft.

    Sirens howl, alarm at night,
and the men jump up from their bunks.
    Robert yells, run for it.
move already, move already, shake a leg (hurry up), run.

The antiaircraft guns are ready and raised skyward
and he sits in his plane
and in his shaking hand a family picture.
A last look at his wife,
in her arms his little son,
and he breathes heavily, I’ll come soon,
I’ll come home soon, he’s been saying that for a long time now.

    [Refrain]

Will I die today, have to abandon the world and leave?
    Will I lose the fight,
the cost for that (being), never to see you again?
Nevertheless, my homeland needs protection as well,
    because of that I'm here.
Freedom for the people and the Fatherland,
this drives him exactly for that.

    And he starts the engines,
    Adrenaline spreads through his body.
    I will do my best.
I'll find you, you enemies, wherever you are
    A glance at the picture,
then the plane flies into the dark night.
Now it is called to perform and the salvo crashes
The whole sky is covered with bombers of the Royal Airforce
    but he resists.
    Lets nothing distract him throughout,
holds the controls firmly in his hands.

    [Refrain]

He looks to the side and to Hans, his plane only a fireball.
No! they will not get me.
Comrade I send to you on parting, a thunderous salute.
On the radio they say: “Guys, guys, come back.”
because reinforcements are moving up, now we show them
    how the German can fight.
Five German planes were lost on this night.
And here he sits with his thoughts,
perhaps he will be the next.
Even if it will someday sometime be so,
that I will never again see you, my family,
still, (so) that you in freedom, in freedom can live.
For that I will fight until to the last, for that I will gladly leave
And tell to our son, tell him everything about me.
And I am always close to you and with you.

    [Refrain] X 2

    genau dafür
    genau dafür

    exactly for that,
    exactly for that

die Nacht = the night; nachts = at night (adverb)
    --> alarm at night
The comma might even be incorrect. Does the singer make a significant pause there? Because if not: Alarm heulen = to sound the alarm
--> Sirens sound the alarm at night

Die Flag bereit und gen Himmel aufgestellt
The flag is ready and raised heavenward
    FLAG = FLugAbwehrGeschütz = anti-aircraft warfare
And isn't heaven more the Christian thingy? Here it's more sky, where the airplanes are ^^

The anti-aircraft warfare is ready and raised skyward.

in ihren Armen sein kleiner Sohn,
in her arms his small son,
just for my understanding: why isn't it little here? Or could you use both?

    das sagt er lange schon.
this he’s said for a while now.
He's been saying that for a long time now.

    Und er startet die Motoren
    And he starts the engine,
Can you say engines? because motoren is plural here.

I find you, her enemies wherever you are
ihr is here 2nd person plural.
i would translate the simple present with a future here

I'll find you, you enemies, wherever you are

Der ganze Himmel bedeckt mit Bombern der Royal Airforce
The whole sky is covered with bombers of the gathering/rolling air force
The whole sky is covered with bombers of the Royal Airforce

What kind of song is this? Nazi pilots fighting for _freedom_? I'm sure that's what they thought they were fighting for back then but still...making a song like that today is kinda...idk

    Hi Luvya,

Thanks for looking this over. The lyrics came from Annett. She sent them to me, so I have a reluctantance to arbitrarily make changes even though no one's perfect and unintentional mistakes are sometimes made. So if I am not sure especially in German, I wait for a second opinion such as yours.

    Ich komme heim
I should have translated this since the other line has "bald" in it.

die Nacht = the night; nachts = at night (adverb)
    --> alarm at night
The comma might even be incorrect. Does the singer make a significant pause there? Because if not: Alarm heulen = to sound the alarm
--> Sirens sound the alarm at night
    Definitely a significant pause there.

    FLAG = FLugAbwehrGeschütz = anti-aircraft warfare
And isn't heaven more the Christian thingy? Here it's more sky, where the airplanes are ^^
The anti-aircraft warfare is ready and raised skyward.
Something new! I knew Flak = antiaircraft fire. Since it's "die Flag" and "der Geschütz" is singular, the "die" indicates plural, correct? Your right I wasn't thinking, "sky" not "heaven" Duh!

in ihren Armen sein kleiner Sohn,
in her arms his small son,

just for my understanding: why isn't it little here? Or could you use both?
Maybe both could be used but now that you point it out, "little" does sound more correct. See you proved my point.

    das sagt er lange schon.
He's been saying that for a long time now.
I know better, I know sagt means "says" not "said", another second guess into a mistake. "for a while now", perhaps it is an unfortunate choice of words since without a qualifier word it doesn't indicate short or long. Another way I would say it is "for some time now" which also doesn't really indicate whether it is a short or long time.

    Und er startet die Motoren
    And he starts the engine,

Can you say engines? because motoren is plural here.
Yes! The Messerschmitt BF110 had two engines, so there were multi-engine german fighter aircraft. I overlooked the plural. OOPs

I find you, her enemies wherever you are

ihr is here 2nd person plural.
i would translate the simple present with a future here
I'll find you, you enemies, wherever you are
I get confused with that. I don't use 2nd person plural vey often, but I think I've got it straight now. Thank you.

Der ganze Himmel bedeckt mit Bombern der Royal Airforce
The whole sky is covered with bombers of the gathering/rolling air force

The whole sky is covered with bombers of the Royal Airforce
Ok, "Royal" was the first thing that popped into my head also but the lyrics from Annett say Roll. I tried looking that word up every way I could and nothing suggested "Royal". Is this a German thing that I wouldn't know about?

    genau dafür
    genau dafür

exactly for that, exactly for that
I translated those words as "to precisely that" as part of another verse. Am I wrong or are both valid?

Yeah, it sounded kind of strange to me also. As I understand it not all members of the armed forces were Nazis, but when you are in the position of defending your homeland and your family, it doesn't matter how you got there, you do what you feel have to. Thanks again for your help. Always something new to learn.

Shouldn't 'Ich komme heim" be 'I am coming home'. If it was 'Ich werde _____ kommen' that would be 'will come'. Right?

Ofc not every airforce member was a devoted nazi. You simply got killed when you refused obedience ^^ Still it's kinda strange. Considering what we talked about, like Germans being all touchy about Nazi stuff...I don't think this song has the potential to be played on the radio

die Flag has to be plural because it is das geschütz - right!
die Flak (FLug-Abwehr-Kanone) is basically the same thing and is feminine, so it could also be singular and just a typo

I can't think of a "german thing" about the royal airforce. it's just called that way ^.^

dafür is more for that not to that, i would change it in the chorus, too. it refers to "deshalb bin ich hier" --> that's why i'm here, exactly/precisely for that/to do that

@TheNuttyOne technically you're correct. But in spoken language Germans tend to you simple present a lot when they express the future.
Example: "Morgen komm ich heim" = I will come home tomorrow.
I realize that you can use the progressive present as an indication of the future in spoken English too: "I am coming home tomorrow" but I have the impression that this is less frequent/more colloquial than the German thing. We hardly ever say things like "Morgen werde ich heimkommen" whereas in English you would probably say "I will be coming home tomorrow" or "I'll come home tomorrow" or "I'm going to come home tomorrow" which all are grammatical expressions of the future.
Hope it became clear what I meant, I tend to write too much

    Yep, probably not!

Don't try to confuse me it's too easy, no challenge at all.

I can't think of a "german thing" about the royal airforce. it's just called that way
HaHa! Let me rephrase that. Is Roll a german slang word for Royal? It is just hard to believe a mistake like that.

dafür is more for that not to that, i would change it in the chorus, too. it refers to "deshalb bin ich hier" --> that's why i'm here, exactly/precisely for that/to do that
    Got it!
