You're probably right jardinero. The Word Reference website says "a destajo" is a set phrase meaning: "by the item, by the job" but that didn't really seem suited to that line.

Yep, my dictionary translates it as 'piecework', which I had to look up in an English dictionary Means work that is paid per item/piece completed.
Didn't make much sense there!

To work "a destajo" means, as you said, to be paid for unit produced (e.g. you made 1 chair, you get paid what you have agreed for 1 chair, in opposition with a work where you are paid by hour) But to do something "a destajo" also means that you do something without taking the necessary breaks, that you continue to do it even when you are so tired you should stop. For example you could say you studied "a destajo" if you stayed all night up reading.

So in the lyrics "y mi legajo cuenta a destajo que me porté bien" means that he really, really worked hard all his life.
