T'asteri tou voria

Can somebody explain to me the real (or the deep) meaning of the verses

φεγγαρια μου παλια
καινουργια μου πουλια

from the song Τ'αστερι του βορια of Manos Hadzidakis? What does it symbolize? The times past? The future encounters? I am not asking for a translation, I understand the words, but not the meaning.

Even though I haven't studied literature,
and even if Gatsos never attended an interview........

it's pretty clear that these two lyrics is the pray of a future emigrant
to moon and birds but......

Since the moon is the SAME ONE for all the countries of the world
and since that every country has it's OWN ecosystem
(meaning different kind of birds in our case),
that is I SUPPOSE the reason of the difference between "old moons" and "new found birds"

I won't be surprised if there's another analysis, but I gave it a try.

i thought i’d give it a try:

(τ’) αστέρι του βοριά θα φέρει η ξαστεριά...*
(the) north star will be brought by the starry sky,
(= will come shining in the starry sky)
και πριν φανεί μέσα απ΄το πέλαγο πανί,
but before a sail will appear out of the sea,
θα γίνω κύμα και φωτιά,
i will become wave and fire
να σ' αγκαλιάσω ξενιτιά
to embrace you, foreign land(s).

και συ χαμένη μου πατρίδα μακρυνή,
and you, my lost distant homeland,
θα μείνεις χάδι και πληγή
will remain a caress and a wound,
σαν ξημερώσει σ' άλλη γή
as the dawn will brake in a different land.

τώρα πετώ για της ζωής το πανηγύρι
now i fly to my life's celebration.
τώρα πετώ για της χαράς μου τη γιορτή

φεγγάρια μου παλιά, καινούρια μου πουλιά
my old moons, my newfound birds
διώχτε τον ήλιο και την μέρα απ’το βουνό
chase the sun and the day away from the mountain,
για να με δείτε νά περνώ σαν αστραπή στον ουρανό
to watch me cross the sky like a lightning.


to me it is a direct request , a plea of the poet (nikos gkatsos)
to the past moons (the past times, whatever is being left behind)
and the newfound birds (that have just been or are yet to be
encountered, the new experiences ahead), to clear the way
(to send the sun and the day (= the light) away), for him to
burst through the skies as a lightning on his way to new lands,
that could be a new homeland, a new relationship, a new era
dawning/etc...


i used to get somehow depressed listening to this song, because
there is an obvious melancholy there, however it did strike me at
one time that it is all about hope and light, and this is the way i
see it still.

wondering what you guys think about the meaning of this song.
