Indeed, the translation was difficult but it was worth it; besides this, the song's theme is very funny

Yes it is a funny song indeed! When I was married my father insisted that the band play this song. There was plenty of laughter. I knew bits and pieces of it, and the general meaning, but never knew the whole thing until now. Of course my father wanted this song played because of the significance with my own name. Not to mention that the melody is a good general dance tune as well.

Yes Geomac I am of Greek ancestry. My grandparents immigrated to the US early in the 20th century. Of all their grandchildren I was the youngest so both yiayia's and papou's had past away by the time I was 11 years old. There were not many Greeks living in my area and my parents knew the language well, but did not regularly speak it at home - with my grandparents gone, I lost the language over the years (I'm 51 now).

Well I did not listen to my parents and did not marry a Greek girl. Getting divorced (happily) and am going back to my Greek roots. When I was in my late teens/ early twenties I decided to get tutored in Greek and my tutor was very smart. He used music to teach me vocabulary. He would give me sheet music to Greek songs (written in Greek) and I had to translate them. He was also a musician (played bouzouki and guitar) and after I translated the lyrics, he would teach me the songs. Much easier to remember the words in a song, than boring vocabulary lessons.

That is why I consider myself very fortunate to have stumbled across this forum. In just a week of looking at posts and searching music, so much has come back to me.

I supposed that you were greek because of your username and of the conjunction with ,,O Haralambis" song title.

IMHO there is often a kind of little drama within diaspora...and getting back to the roots (generally speaking) is a very good choice.
With greeks having so many beautiful songs... wow, it is worth. Also very good idea to remind your native language through the songs; this works even for us who are not greek in learning the language in an easy and pleasant way
