Actually, I wouldn't translate "Sofakissen" (="scatter cushion") as "jello" ... ??!

Never tell the artist what he wants to say.
This way of translation should only be done, when the original version uses an idiom. In this case you can use another idiom from the target language or anything else that describes the meaning. But when the original version uses an uncommon expression or comparison (and this one is uncommon), there's often a reason for it, and you should translate it as literal as possible. Depends on the type of text you translate of course. But in a poetic or lyrical text you can't just translate it as anything that is somewhere near the original meaning.
