SOME FACTS ABOUT THE SONG:

This is a traditional song that Greek students use to sing during the national holiday for the Greek War of Independence, on March 25th (1821).

I couldn’t find anywhere who were the persons that the song is talking about. So here they are my own explanations of it. I hope I am not totally wrong.

Nikiforos can be:
1) Nikiforos Fokas (Νικηφόρος Φωκάς) He was a Byzantine Emperor of the 10th century. He retook Crete island from the Muslim’s occupation.
2) Nikiforos Bryennios (Νικηφόρος Βρυέννιος) He was a byzantine general and historian, husband of Anna Komnene.

Digenes Akrites (Διγενής Ακρίτας) is a famous hero that appears in many Greek folk songs. In the end, only Death can kill him, after a battle in the marble threshing floors.

Anna Komnene (Άννα Κομνηνή) was a Byzantine princess and scholar.

The son of Anna komnene can be either Alexios Komnenos (Αλέξιος Κομνηνός) or John Doukas (Ιωάννης Δούκας).
