very interesting question. I think you listen more to songs which reflect the situation you are in. For example if you are love sick, you tend to listen to the songs describing this situation.
So, not the songs influence us, just the other way round.
There is a greek song DINATA DINATA by Eleveria Arvantaki;
I did not really understand each single word of these lyrics but the native speakers told me, that the meassage of this song is: everything is possible. And when you listen to the song, you can feel its strength.

Dear Edmond33, your recommendations are very interesting, I think those are really strong topics. And like Ferrat's song says, it's important to write about it so people will not forget. If you want to start a new thread I'll be happy to join. I know about a few really good songs along those lines in Spanish. However, the songs that I'm looking for are positive songs that will cheer me up and make me feel better about my day. More like 'Imagine'. Thanks a lot!!

I have something for you to consider.
You are right, we tend to listen to music depending on our mood or our situation...
But, let's say a loved one left you... my point is that if you keep dwelling on it and listening to sad songs, or song that will remind you of this person, probably you will be crying a lot and it will take you longer to get over it.
But, if you set your mind in a more positive way, and listen to music according to that, I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but I think you would get over that easiER and fastER.
Like this song you mention, 'I will survive', or Cher's 'Believe' and 'Strong enough'.
What do you guys think?
What I can say is that since January 2006 I've putting a lot of effort in being a happier person, and my efforts include listening to more positive songs (and singing along when I'm by myself) and it's been working wonders for me.
Of course I listen to all kinds of music, and I can appreciate the songs, but I'm trying to be more conscious and analytic about the music I listen to.
