Thank you very much Alessandro !!! You are a very good friend !!!! I wanna thank you for the corrections you have made in my little Greek text... I always experience some difficulties with the genre of the nouns and the pronoums... Unfortunately I didn't have any help with grammar books and exercises in learning the modern Greek, I started with the basis of the ancient that I have learnt at school, and during these last year I have tried to learn the modern Greek "by ear" only listening to the Greek radio stations that I can receive here in southern Italy where I live... Thank you also for the suggestion link of the Greek characters, and I'm very curious to see how did you translate from modern Greek to ancient... I will go to see your link... I have to admit that I'm searching for the meaning of some modern Greek words, if you and all the friends of this section want, I can write them... And by the way, even if all of you need a help in learning the Italian language and grammar, I would be very glad to give help to you !!!! (by the way, I have discovered that there are some words that are the same for spelling and meaning both in modern Greek and Italian...)
Kalo vrady !!!!
PS: "minollo" is only a nickname... it is taken from a comic sketch of the "La Smorfia" Neapolitan italian trio and represents a fantastic animal who was interpreted by the great Neapolitan actor Massimo Troisi who unfortunately had died several years ago... my real name is Francesco so all of you can call me in this way !!!

Ancient Greek is much like ancient Latin. If you know the one, you can easily learn the other, but this is not the case with modern Greek and Italian. Both of these languages have evolved through thousands of years, and it is only natural to be so different to their antiquity counterparts. If you know ancient Greek, it is not much of a help to master the modern Greek too. But if you are Greek, learning ancient Greek can help greatly improving your vocabulary. That's all.

There is really no magic recipe! The same way I translate from English to Greek. On the basis of ancient Greek I learnt at school, with a good dictionary at hand and lots of patience.

Actually I am interesting in learning Italian, as I have said before, so I may need your help at some point! http://www.allthelyrics.com/forum/645771-post8.html
One thing at a time though. Right now I try to study vocabulary and learn new words.

Sadly, my knickname has no happy connotations, it is exactly what it says...
Buonanotte amico mio!

Hi once again Alexander... I have read what you said and I start answering to you starting by the radio argument... I already know the http://www.e-radio.gr/ web site that you suggested me because I am an amateur radio "dx-er" it's a non common and well known hobby and I try to explain to you and to all friends in what it consists, people who have this passion are interested and involved in all that regards the radio receptions, especially when a foreign station is caught... Regarding the Greek radio station, here in the city where I live (its name is Lama and lies near Taranto city in the Apulia region, it's a very little town of approximately 1.500 inhabitants and is bounded by the Ionian sea) these are the Greek radios that can be received:
From the national public ERT service we can receive NET 105.8 on the frequency of 729 kilohertz, Era Sport on the 792 and 981 kilohertz frequency, and other regional emissions (Kerkyra on 1008 kilohertz, Chania on 1512 kilohertz, Orestiada on 1080 kilohertz and Tripolis on 1314 kilohertz). RSA Amaliada was received by a friend of mine that is also a dx-er, its name is Nikos and he lives in Heraklion... Other Greek radios that I have received here are those who broadcast in the so called X-band (extra 1611 kilohertz) and I have heard the following stations (please allow me to copy and paste from our little forum dedicated to radio dx-ing and long distance receptions, you see the frequency and then the name of the station)
1620 radio ouranio toxo ("rainbow" from larisa)
1622 radio pilio (volos) and when it is turned off this frequency is owned by radio kallitehnikos (unid location)
1624 unidentified greek with 80-90's dance music
1625 radiofonikos stathmos tou nikou dynamitis ke tou ianniou tis synergatis (from tyrnavos)
1626 radio delta dimitris (another unid greek)
1629 radio anatolia (kyriakos from kilkis)
1630 radio asteras (greek from kilkis, it has also a transmitter set on 1564 kilohertz)
1632 "radiofonikos stathmos eptanisa" (probably a fisherman from corfu or kefalonia, there were only microphone tests "ena ena ena","ena dyo tria tessera pende","kalispera ke break apo eptanisa" and so on...)
1635 radio deka (unidentified greek)
1680 radio alfa ena (probably larisa)
1694 radio parizionos (probably this is also from larisa)
I was able in the last summer to get a reply from two of them, Nikos "Dynamitis" from Tyrnavos and Kyriakos from Radio Anatolia Kilkis... They gave a GSM mobile phone number, I was able to understand it and I sent to them an SMS message... they called my name on air and it was really amazing !!!! The other Greek radios I know broadcast only via FM and it's quite impossible to receive them here (except in the summer and only in particular conditions, when there is much humidity and there are the so called "E-sporadic" phenomena, the propagation brings here some Greek radios) but I can listen to them on the web... among them for example there are Best 92.6 from Athens, Aqualand 94.8 from Kerkyra, Rhythmos 104.5 from Heraklion and so on... Another station I like very much is Kosmos 93.6 from ERT and luckily its programs are repeated both by ERT Filia and on the regional emissions in medium waves, so I can listen to it even when I'm not connected on the net...
Regarding the comparation between ancient Greek and Latin, I think that actually there are very similar, especially in the construction of the phrase. Probably the problem is that I know ancient Greek both written and spoken, but the modern only spoken and sometimes I have problems in recognizing the words... I am going to see the link where you need a help in learning Italian and if I can I will give you a help...
Hugs once again and "kalo vrady !!!"
francesco

I have a question I'm not Greek but I have been traveling from Athens down the Peleponisos west coast quite a few times the past months. At this time the KTEL bus seems the most efficient way to travel. Still it takes quite a long time.
I noticed that they are working on the train tracks from Athens to Patra. About 75% of the way has been upgraded to double tracks, high speed with no level crossings. It looks very promising...if it will indeed run highspeed trains it should be possible to do Athens-Patra in less than 1.5 hours. That would be totally awesome!
Does anybody know the details on this 'project'? Will they run till Patra or continue down till Pyrgos or maybe even Kalamata eventually? And where do they start? It seems that they are working on the tracks close to Kifisos in Athens as well. Related? It would be so cool if eventually it would be possible to travel from the airport down to Patra by rail. The airport express and KTEL Ilias busses..well..they suck. A railways upgrade would be very very nice :-)
Thanks!

It amazes me that so many posts here are about Greece, Greek music and language.
I am a foreigner, an englishman who lives in Crete, Greece. I speak a little greek learned over so many years, I watch greek TV and love greek music, especially rebetika. I have my own website at:
http://crete.wordpress.com/
and I live and talk Greece and Crete in particular, and, living here, I understand the attraction for greece, the place, the poetry.
But now so many people have become interested from so many countries.
Please, can anyone tell me why?
Ray
