    As an istanbul lover, I wanted to contribute to this forum by submitting the translation of this beautiful poem. I found this translation on a website and was blown away by it. I hope you all will enjoy reading this as much as i did.

    regards

    Diana

    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed
    Önce hafiften bir rüzgar esiyor;
    At first a soft wind blows
    Yavaş yavaş sallanıyor
    Slowly trembles
    Yapraklar ağaçlarda;
    The leaves on the trees
    Uzaklarda, çok uzaklarda,
    Far away, so far away
    Sucuların hiç durmayan çıngırakları
    unheard bells of water-sellers
    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı.
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed.

    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı;
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed
    Kuşlar geçiyor, derken;
    Then the birds fly by
    Yükseklerden, sürü sürü, çığlık çığlık.
    High, in groups they fly screaming
    Ağlar çekiliyor dalyanlarda;
    At the harbours the fishnets are pulled
    Bir kadının suya değiyor ayakları;
    The feet of a woman touches the sea
    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı.
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed

    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı;
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed
    Serin serin Kapalıçarşı
    The indoor-market is so cool

    Cıvıl cıvıl Mahmutpaşa
    *Mahmutpasa* is so noisy
    Güvercin dolu aVlular
    The gardens full of pigeons
    Çekiç sesleri geliyor doklardan
    From the workplaces comes the sound of hammers
    Güzelim bahar rüzgarında ter kokuları;
    The beautiful spring breeze smells of sweat
    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı.
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed

    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı;
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed
    Başımda eski alemlerin sarhoşluğu
    I get high on old civilisations
    Loş kayıkhaneleriyle bir yalı;
    A mansion by the shipmakers' workshops
    Dinmiş lodosların uğultusu içinde
    Inside there the sound of the winds are quiet
    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı.
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed

    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı;
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed
    Bir yosma geçiyor kaldırımdan;
    A prostitute walks on the pavement
    Küfürler, şarkılar, türküler, laf atmalar.
    Swearwords, pop songs, folk songs, insults
    Bir şey düşüyor elinden yere;
    Something falls down from her hands
    Bir gül olmalı;
    It must be a rose
    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı.
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed

    İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı;
    Im listening to Istanbul, my eyes are closed
    Bir kuş çırpınıyor eteklerinde;
    A bird is flapping at your skirt
    Alnın sıcak mı, değil mi, biliyorum;
    I don’t know if your brow is hot or not
    Dudakların ıslak mı, değil mi, biliyorum;
    I don’t know if your lips are wet or not
    Beyaz bir ay doğuyor fıstıkların arkasından
    Just behind the peanut trees arises a white moon
    Kalbinin vuruşundan anlıyorum;
    I can tell from the way your heart is poundering
    İstanbul'u dinliyorum.
    Im listening to Istanbul

    thank you for bringing us this beautiful poem, Diana. i think the translator mistook a couple of sentences:

    Sucuların hiç durmayan çıngırakları
    unheard bells of water-sellers
    rather, incessant

    Loş kayıkhaneleriyle bir yalı;
    A mansion by the shipmakers' workshops
    a mansion with its dim boathouses

    Serin serin Kapalıçarşı
    The indoor-market is so cool
    this is not a mistake, though, but considering its fame, i'd rather leave it as Kapalıçarşı. the official translation is old bazaar, although grand bazaar, or covered bazaar are also commonly used. (Grand Bazaar, Istanbul)

    thank you again.

    Diana,

    Im so happy that you came across this poem. It is one of the best poems about Istanbul.. Did you listen to Leman Sam's song 'Istanbul'u dinliyorum'? She made a song out of the first and last verses of the poem, I'll just email it to you now...
