40,000 lira is like 20,000 usd and not a lot for an american wedding but very expensive for turkey. remember their salary is like 500 usd a month. but their housing is a lot less. i went to 2 weddings in turkey. one was in konya and the other was in a village. both were very different from each other. the only thing that was the same was the henna. they both did henna. my henna is still on my hand!! it was great to see the difference. and learn the history of "why this and whay that." you know here in america its all the same.

I agree with you. Just in my opinion ... for me, the only weddings that I enjoy in the U.S. are traditional weddings ... Greek, Jewish, Russian, Scottish, Irish, Italian, like that. Some others are very nice too, and I really like "garden weddings" ... and my son was married by the seaside in a very bright and beautiful setting ... but a lot of people that I know just went off on some crazy tangent, no foundation. Some people just throw money around and there's not a real "theme" or anything like that. But anyway, I'm sure that others will disagree with me, but that's my experience.

By the way, I noticed that you're from France. Please excuse a small diversion, but my father's mother's family is French, so I am 1/4 French (Huguenot), and I look for people from France ...

But anyway, when you were in NYC, you didn't see or hear of traditional/cultural weddings? I'm just curious ..... otherwise, please pardon my temporary intrusion.

i love american weddings!! health care? health care is not a disaster here at all. i have great health care...and our medical is the best in the world. we dont have universal health care and i dont want it!! i dont believe our country should pay for everyones medical. people need to be responsible and pay for their own. i dont know anyone that moves out of the states for better health care!! the best health care is in america.

shopping is pretty good in paris but completely overpriced--you can get the same thing in america for a little cheaper!! i was in paris 1 week ago and i was like wooooooooo i will buy that in boston!!
my dream is a garden wedding by the seaside---in portsmouth nh...or in rhode island at the breakers..

if she had problems with the wedding planner thats not a fair accessment on
american weddings--thats a bad planner and the bride and groom did not communicate with the planner...

i love nyc and la but i HATE miami!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
btw thanks for the statue of liberty!!

I can so agree about NYC and LA Never been to Miami, but I'll cruise there on Sept 14 and 21 .... please wish me luck? I'll probably need it

I have to agree about health care too, and there is always at least one hospital nearby that is required by law to give medical care to anyone who needs it. I think one of the biggest problem is that the government's cost for free and subsidized medical care, and also insurance premiums for people who pay it, has become outrageous ... but now, prescription insurance is better than ever ... now there are at least 8 different ways that people, everybody, can qualify for "co-pay" or even free medicine. But also, just trying to manage the various medical programs for 300 million people is just so overwhelming. The socialistic bureaucracy itself is a monster. So I believe those are the two biggest sources of frustration about healthcare in the U.S. ....

Anyway, I think LA and NYC are great in opposite ways, more or less ... like old versus new, or something like that ... but the people who live in both cities can be so friendly and helpful! That always amazes me so much.

... I actually intended to mention an upcoming wedding, so I'll get back to that in a sec ...

...but just want to say, for about 250 years France and U.S. have had a "strange" relationship ... close friends and allies in war, and then a disgreement, and then allies again, and then that incredible gift that became our most amazing national symbol! I think there is always more than meets the eye, something better than the small differences from year to year.

... edit ... Miami is about 55% Latino now. You know how the Latin guys can be ... but I'm joking :-)

Anyway ... I have a young Turkish friend here in the U.S. who will get married in Spring, and I have an "informal" invitation, but they haven't decided where they'll get married. Maybe here in my state of NC, or maybe in Turkey, where her father lives ... but I think she'll go home to do it.

I completely understand, about both of your experiences. Even my Puerto Rican friend (who is happily married) says exactly the same thing. He doesn't like to see it either.

Well, it depends, generally they do not let the soldiers for days, cause most of them ask for permission, if they did let them, there wouldn't be army =) The day of fest, the meeting rooms are full of people, we see them on tvs, news, lots of people go to the places to meet the soldiers. I am not expert but as much as I know, they don't give special permissions to soldiers for 'Bayram'.

First let me say something, the foreigners wonder about the weddings most, I wonder why =)
It depends dear, 40000 YTL is much, you can prepare a good wedding with this. I am asked for wedding. But what kind of wedding, it depends on the couple, the place, the time, the economic and social statu, they are important, the wedding changes much according to them. There are many differences along weddings.

Also sorry for another interruption ... but the sad thing is that there are always other people, other groups or countries, who will take advantage of someone's holiday, any big holiday, when people might be distracted ... so, unfortunately, at certain times, soldiers have to be even more ready for trouble. Of course commanders want to be as lenient as possible, but not so much that the army's vigilance will be endangered, weakened. I say this because of things that happened in the Cold War, during the Soviet era. For example, the Soviets occasionally would take advantage of our U.S. holiday Memorial Day, in Late May, the first big holiday of the summer, when everyone wanted to go to the beach for 3 days. And now, terrorists are also very famous for using holidays or anniversaries, either theirs or the special occasions of another group or country, to implement acts of terror. It's sad, but it's very necessary to be prepared always, but sometimes to be even more prepared.

But still we have weddings and celebrations, because we just can't let fear rule our lives! But I think it's just good to remember ... as you remember, Raisa ... that some people make tremendous sacrifices, just to try to keep the world safe for the rest of us.

Happy Ramadan

i know wht u mean ( smell problem ) u can see it very easy n clearly when u live in dormitory oh God i was living there only for 4 months but i still cant believe how i could live there my roommate didnt change her clothes for 5 days and had problems wth her personal hygiene so trust me i knw very wel wht u mean but really not everyone is like this for example me but im not 100% french it depends on ppl.
And u mean tht french ppl were rude for u ? interesting but my foreign friends frm uni said tht they were also rude for them at the begining coz some of french ppl think " if you came to our country you should speak in our language" and they had problems to communicate in English language now they dont complain

i love sex and the city too!! and i am spoiled...my lexus says "prenses" as my plate :P the fashion is the best. ANYTIME you want to come to nyc and shop, i will be sooooo happy to go with you. omg so i bought a pair of burberry shoes (700 for little under 300) and i was at my sons school today. a guy came up to me and said "i love your shoes" okay i have great gaydar but he wasnt even on it!!!! he HAS to be!! thats the first time any man said anything about shoes to me before!!

i am telling you when i was in paris, they were sooooo rude!! and they like cheese too much!! americans take showers everyday and we only wear our clothing once and then wash. i thought i was going to gag

about the language. thats annoying. we dont think "hey you come here so learn the language." it helps sure but not necessary. we have sooo many immigrants that dont speak english but they learn.

Yes you have right girl but i think one of the reason is that it is easy (for foreigner ppl to get married in Turkey) i read many articles in newspapers about it , i think its pretty common here and UK to go and get married in Turkey.

wht you mean by writing " what kind of wedding" you mean traditional, modern, elegant ??

as she told me they want to get married in september. And place i dont know what they've choosed restaurant or hotel if we talk about the place all i know it ll be in european part of Istanbul
I dont know his social statu but she is not from poor or average family. Her father has his own firm/company i never asked her what her father is doing but almost all the time he is at work. They have their own summer house near Istanbul and really elegant, spacious 2 flats/apartments i can say that they are really rich ppl but they dont boast about it and thts really good she told me that her mother always send money for charity etc.

And what you mean by saying " There are many differences along weddings" ??
