I remember the day when we first met
A new piece of my life fell into place
It was great but as the times go by
I’ve realized you won’t always stay in my life

From the beginning, we’ve had limited time
Our friendship was destined to fall apart
Life carries us in so many different ways
Soon enough we’ll practically be oceans apart

For it’s our times together that came to be
The ones I will always cherish in my memories
These memories that you so willingly discard
Our ephemeral friendship finally broken apart

Now as we part our separate ways
I will never see you again after this day
And as we drift farther and farther apart
Set aside a place for me in your heart

As I reminisce about our lives
I’ve come to see how much I must leave behind
But I promise that I will never forget you
But would you do the same and pay me in kind?

As we exchanged our final farewells
I had known that this one would be our last
This chapter’s done; turn the page
This marks the abrupt end to our past

It’s the little things you did that made me smile
That allowed me to call you a real friend
But nothing lasts forever as fate takes its course
Everything that begins must come to an end

It's the sad truth, isn't it? This happens to just about every person I become friends with, but it took the three last words of my graduating friend to make me completely realize this.
