A friend of mine who collects international music for his Live365 station is hoping that someone here will recognize the song on this recording:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7myO...x1ziUg&index=1
He took this recording directly from a radio station in 1978 and didn't get the title.
So even though he says the station was Greek, that doesn't mean this is a Greek song.
He thinks it IS a Greek song, but I can't make out the words clearly enough to know whether it's Greek or not. I've heard plenty of stuff in the clubs that sounds very similar to this but isn't Greek ...
Anyway, hope you'll take a listen and thanks in advance for doing so. If the song IS Greek, then even if you can't ID it by title, perhaps you can provide the Greek lyrics and an English translation.
One other note to Duffy ... heh heh heh.
Duffy - if you're out there, DON'T listen to this.
Because if it is Greek and it really was played by a Greek station in 1978, it's going to hurt your "Greek"ears, I promise!
Because it's so "non-Greek" according to your classification scheme!

Can you help ID this untitled 1978 recording taken directly from radio?

Hahahahaha!!!
Duffy is everywhere! My dear friend you have to learn more things about our music...This is our traditional (dimotiki=from the people) music and has nothing to do with tsiftetelia!
Anyway, the song you looking for is: (Πού 'σουν Γκόλφω; / pou 'soun Golfo / where were you Golfo?) Is original central Greece from about 1790-1810 and in "tsamikos" rhythm.

Wow! You are the best, Duffy. Thank you so much.
Also, I think you explained something I was wondering about. I thought I heard a "kai" ("and") in the lyrics, but I said to myself, if it is "kai", why is it being pronounced like English "kye" (as in "bye") rather than like English "ki" (like in "key")?
Was "kai" still pronounced like "kye" in Middle Greek, i.e. the same way it was supposed to be pronounced in the Attic Greek and the Homeric Greek that I studied in college? -
Wow again! Thanks "double" for that third clip with the exact version of his recording! "My cup runneth over"

Που ήσουνα Γκόλφω, καημένη Γκόλφω,
που ήσουνα Γκόλφω κι άργησες;
Που ήσουνα Γκόλφω κι άργησες
και νύχτωσες και βράδιασες;
Where were you Golfo, poor Golfo,
Where were you golf, you were late?
Where were you and you were late Golfo
and dark and it gets dark?
I was above, Poor Tasso,
I was over toHelmos.
I was over toHelmos
and I got sick and I can not.
T'arnia bleat, Golfo shout,
t'arnia bleat in the corral.
T'arnia bleat in the corral
and the Golfo stays nun. -
Here is my friend's response, Duffy.
