I remember that espisode !! I always thought the author would have gotten mad, that Patty copied his lyrics; rather than him just being happy he met his former lover.

The lyrics I remember are just " when love has gone, all has gone, the stars refuse to shine"

I remember some of this song. It stays in your head forever!

"When love is gone . all is gone
    The skies cry bitter rain
For all the lovers who have kissed
    And will not kiss again."

That's all I remember but I would love to hear the rest!

Default "When Love Has Gone"---the Lyrics

I hope that I am not posting this too late to help the previous posters asking about the lyrics to this song.

It was only sheer luck that I stumbled upon this board and their questions. I was doing some personal research on that particular episode of The Patty Duke Show---it is one of my two favourite episodes of that series---and a Google search brought me here.

Many, many years ago, when I happened to catch a re-run of "The Song Writer", I took careful notes, because it is a beautiful ballad and I wanted the lyrics to it. The viewer never hears "When Love Has Gone" sung all the way through in the episode. At least, not audibly. During the scene when Jimmy Dean sings it on his show, one hears clearly only the first and last verses. The middle section is obscured by the voice track.

However, earlier scenes, of Cathy Lane saying the words of the poem as she puts it to music ties with the brief audible snippets of the middle section sung by Dean. Thus, I was able to put the lyrics of the entire song together. I wrote them down and have kept them on file for close to twenty-five years, now.

There are three verses, and here they are:

"When Love Has Gone"---music by Cathy Lane; lyrics by Charles Worth Remington

    When love has gone,
    Love has gone . . .
    The stars forget to glow;
And laughter turns to sadder songs
Than we were meant to know.

    When love has gone,
    All is gone . . .
    The skies cry bitter rain
For all the lovers who have kissed
    And will not kiss, again.

    When love has gone,
    Life has gone . . .
    The world's a spinning stone
That's lost in space, and we must face
    Our journey all alone . . .

    . . . Our journey all alone.

Samthedog is right---it stays in your head forever. Hope this helps.

Glad to be of service, Sam.

One thing I've learnt about the Internet: no matter how obscure the interest, there is someone else who shares it.

One point, in the interests of accuracy: I recently discovered that "The Song Writer" is one of the episodes of The Patty Duke Show available on YouTube. I recently watched it, again---this time with the luxury of being able to re-run portions over and over.

I was pleased to confirm that I did a good job of transcribing those many years ago. There are only three verses, and they are accurate as I posted them.

However, I also discovered that there is a bridge between the second and last verses. It's difficult to detect because it is overwhelmed by the dialogue of the Lane family watching the programme in their living room. If I were a sound engineer, I would have the equipment necessary to mute the main track and make that portion of the song intelligible. But since I'm just a guy sitting at a computer, I looped that section of the video over and over about a dozen times, concentrating on the lyrics sung by Jimmy Dean.

With that kind of focus, fortunately, most of the bridge's lyrics are evident. But one word of the first line of the bridge, and almost the entire second line, are too obscured to positively identify. Here is what can be made out. (I put my best guesses for the unidentifiable words in brackets.)

The love that [steeps] of the night,
    [I've heard them] say,
    Leaving with the morning light
    And stealing joys away.

Neither the aired closing credits of the episode, nor any source I can find on the Internet, lists the actual composer of "When Love Has Gone". (I suspect it was Sidney Sheldon, who got his start as a songwriter.)

Thus, we will probably never know just what those obscured lyrics were.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

    Thumbs up Wow!!

    Hi Commander Benson
You are a dedicated researcher! I also watched the episode over on UTube a few days ago ( after your post with the lyrics) but I didn't even realize there was another verse. I was very annoyed when they talked though the actual performance; I really wanted to hear it...ah well so it is!
You are right about the internet. There are always kindred spirits out there in e-land!!
    Enjoy your e-hunting!

thank you so much comander !

it took me a while to reply as I forgot my password.

It's amazing that so much of us were touched by that episode and song !
Does that mean 'older' t.v. touched us more ?
I can't remember sitcoms I watched last week.

    Default Thanks, and thoughts

Wow, thanks to Commander Benson for providing so much info, and to lippysrbad for asking the question!

Just FYI, I've been trying to fill in words for the bridge that may match the meaning the author was going for.

Now, I'm probably wrong, but here is what I came up with:

A love can sleep all the night,
And wake, I've heard them say,
    Leaving with the morning light
    And stealing joys away.
