Dear All,
Let's introduce myself. I'm a dutch artist living in Rotterdam. At the end of WWII my Croatian grandparents fled from former Yugoslavia to Austria and ended up finally in The Netherlands.
I became fascinated with this history, which had influenced not only the life of my family, but also the lives of a great number of other people. I wanted to understand what it meant to have to leave your own country, your own house.
Here's my question: I'm looking for old or new slavic songs/lyrics that deal with home/homeland or displacement. I would be very very thankful if someone could help me with that!
Kind regards, Monique

Searching for songs about 'home'
-
First of all, I am Serbian but have been raised in Yugoslavia and as Yugoslavian... That means that I learned a lot of stuff in school about our 'history' and later lived through a lot of things that created some new histories and raised doubts about old histories.. At some point I gave up on the idea of ever figuring out the whole truth in all that is called "history" by any of the sides and decided to concentrate on what is now... and I still live by the rule that my mother taught me - all people are created equal!
I can only begin to imagine how it must be like for people who had to leave their homes because of some mass insanity and politics and... It was always the case that innocent people suffered the most.
What we should actually discuss here are only songs, which is what you asked about in the first placeso..
Here is one I personally love veryyy very much...
Uzalud vam trud sviraci
Sto put sam se evo zakleo
pred jutro te prevario
drugoj ja sam bagrem nosio
tebe iznevjerio
Sto put sam se evo zakleo
pa te prevario
sad bih dukate od jada
bas u blato bacio
Ref.
A za oblak mi se mjesec skrio
sakrio mi pute
uzalud vam trud sviraci
za drugog su dunje zute
A ja evo nekad sjetim se
sto moj caca znao reci je
sve ti duse, sine, slavonske
uz pjesmu prebole
al ne oproste
Uz pjesmu mi se evo rodimo
uz pjesmu umiremo
Slavonijo ko te nije volio
ne zna sta je izgubio
~ In Vain You Try Musicians
I swore one hundred times already
Before morning I cheated on you
To someone else I carried black locust
Betrayed you
I swore one hundred times already
and then cheated on you
Woe ducats I would now
throw away right in the mud
And the moon hid behind a cloud
hid my way
In vain you try musicians
quinces are yellow for someone else
And I sometimes remember
what my dad used to say
Slavonian souls, my son,
get over everything, with singing
but don't forgive
We are born with singing
We die with singing
Slavonija, those who never loved you
Don't know what they've lost
And the moon hid behind a cloud
hid my way
In vain you try musicians
quinces are yellow for someone else
