****Sympligades" is a word of Homeric origin which has come to mean simply big trouble. The "καντήλι" (kantíli) is the oil lamp that burns in front of the icon. The peacock is a bad luck bird.

this song is really very difficult even for us greeks. It is really very amazing song.
The music and the lyrics. Because it is to poetry it makes difficult to understand

The point of the song is about the world and the bad people that there out there who are like those who are in hell. Everyone wants to harm you.Life is dificult like simpligades which are one of the hardest dificuties that odyseas had to pass according to mythologie.
But there are some who will try to aproch you like the bed of the woman but it not more than a trap .

It is to poetry to translate in any language and more in English

hi guys, I have no idea if you still check this forum, cause I noticed that these posts are from 2008! But I still wanted to share what I know of this song, in case you're interested. Tou kato kosmou ta poula is indeed a very difficult song, but it is about much more than just how bad the world is. The song as I understand it, is about the bad things that have been done to Greece/that she experienced in her history:

13 centuries are just an unlucky number, but symbolize the time that Greece was under Ottoman (Turkish) rule. The Bride is Greece herself, and the golden jewels are her ancient herritage. She is sleepless because she is looking for her lost territory. The Cyclades that are her earings, are in a sense her dowry, because they were occupied by the Italians early in the 20th century and later restored to her after the Balkan Wars. I believe that the 'bed' that is the 'lair of a killer' refers to the ethnic cleansing that went on in the early 20th century, in what is now Greece as well as in Turkey.
The second bit is indeed about the hardships that are awaiting Greece (still refering to the things that happened in the Balkan Wars, 1st World War and the subsequent Greco-Turkish war of 1919-22)
And then the last part about the peacocks and the trap that glazaridu referred to, is about how the Great Powers promised Greece everything (including a huge part of Turkey), the suit the stiched so to speak, but then in the end it is a trap and Greece is left with nothing.

I hope this gives gives the song a new meaning to you, and I am curious to see if other Greeks share my interpretation. I still believe it is a beautifull song btw, and I hope you are no longer scared of it
