Two questions though:

--> how is there to decide when to translate the word 'an' into 'when' of 'if' because there is a big difference in meaning in 'when you call' or 'if you call'?

Μα μέσα σου τα χάνω
--> in a dictionary I found 'τα χάνω' as an expression, translated as 'going out of my mind'. How do I decide that the 'τα' was in fact referring to the mistakes in the sentence before? Because I translated the expression, I also thought the μέσα σου was more something like 'because of you'.

The word "αν", DOES mean "if" in Greek, yes, you are absolutely correct ... It's the word "όταν", that probably gets you confused (?!), which means "when", in Greek ...


Μα μέσα σου τα χάνω
--> in a dictionary I found 'τα χάνω' as an expression, translated as 'going out of my mind'. How do I decide that the 'τα' was in fact referring to the mistakes in the sentence before? Because I translated the expression, I also thought the μέσα σου was more something like 'because of you'.

The Greek expression is "τα χάνω", and (just these two words together), it DOES mean "going out of my mind", again you are very correct ...
However, to make it a bit more clear, I would rather use the English expression of "I lose my marbles" because that would be more "appropriate" with the "explanation" ...
Obviously, as you probably know already, "τα" is the "article" of "neutral" in its "plular, nominative case" ... e.g. το τραπέζι, τα τραπέζια (=the table, the tables) ...
... Therefore, "τα ", in the expression 'τα χάνω', refers to something that is more than one, obviously ... ... In a sense, human beings have "more than one" thing in their mind (hopefully, at least ... lol ), ... so, it comes to reason that, when a person "loses her mind", she is losing "more than one" thing ... Do you see ?! ...

Now, the word "μέσα", means "inside" in Greek ... And subsequently, "μέσα σου" means "inside you" > "inside of you" ...

(Note: "μα" = "but" )

As a whole, the sentence "μα μέσα σου τα χάνω", would literally translate to "but inside you, I lose my mind" ... ...
However, "expressions" need "SPECIAL" treatments with "translations" and that's why they become "INTERPRETATIONS" ... ...
Now, as the general belief is that when and if "I lose my mind", I am in fact "losing myself", it is consequently apparent that :
... "μα μέσα σου τα χάνω", is "but, inside of you, I lose myself" ...

Would all this make sense ?!

To tell you the truth,as far as the second expression is concerned It doesn't make much sense to me *but* the "μα" shows that this sentence is connected to the previous one so I assume that it refers to the "mistakes". However,as a context it does not make clear sense with one meaning nor the other,so I think it's one of those sentences you can actually interpret the way you want.It could as well be what you say ie I'm losing my mind because of you, but it seems remote to me.

As for the "αν" : "Αν" means "if". That is its meaning.It actually doesn't have another one and on 99% of all occasions this is clear.You might have seen it translated as "when" in very few occasions and this is like this: If you are talking about something that you are absolutely *sure* it will happen,using "if" in the beginning of the sentence makes it more like time definition.Even in English this can be used.For example,you can say "If my brother comes home from work,then we'll talk". You are sure that your brother will come home from work,so "if" in this case has mostly the meaning of "when he comes". That's the same with "αν". But even in this case,in Greek we rarely use "αν" for this purpose. If we use it,we prefer "σαν" as in "Σαν έρθεις" that doesn't leave any doubts we refer to time and not possibility.However,this expression was mostly used in the old days.Nowadays it is considered more of a "poetic" expression.We just use "Όταν". Hope I made sense! :-)

I can't help but noticing that greek lessons tend to become more and more interesting on this forum

And I'm happy to see this greek lessons occur, so I can refresh what I have learned before. It's not easy to maintain the knowledge I got from a course that was last year, when I don't have any practise in everyday life..
