There are so many although It is hard to go past Joe Satriani overall
He is really good... but the best? I don't think so...
The best, I have to say Jason becker.
For his age when he played, he was like a guitar prodigy.
To bad he got ALS :'(
(its kinda ironic though in a bad way)

who is sinister gates? The Holy Guitar Trinity are: Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Pat Metheny. dare to deny that
It's spelt Synyster Gates and he's one of Avenged Sevenfold's two guitar players
Luke covered most of my votes except for:
Chet Atkins
B.B. King
Steve Howe (Yes)
Jeff Beck (YardBirds/Jeff Beck Group/Honey Drippers)

Them that can, do; them that can't... memorize Artist and Title
Carlos Santana
That man is a freak...
And I agree with Luke of Metal's choice to some extent.
'I have a cane and I know how to use it.'
there should be different areans for best guitarist votes. we can all sit here until our fingers bleed from typing arguing who is the best and still not agree.
blues guitarists can't compete with heavy metal players. heavy metal players cant compete with flamenco players. flamenco players cant compete with classical guitarists. etc. etc. etc.
could BB King play a Pantera song like it should be played? probably not, but that doesnt mean he is worse or better than someone else.
and don't count out bass players either. they are often overshadowed by they leads.
My personal favorites (best or heavily notable):
Jim Hendrix
Carlos Santana
Joe Satriani
Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) ... just to make sure he gets a mention
Notable for various reasons:
George Harrison
THE Best? I agree with Red, and I really can't vote for 1 Best-of-all.
If anyone might not agree with (or doesn't really know) Alvin Lee/Ten Years After, give a listen to "I Can't Keep From Crying" ... beginning at about 2:00 and for the next 6 minutes. It's sweet, even immaculate in places, Chet-Atkins-perfect ... Santana-ish for a minute or so ... etc.
*Cough*EDIIE VANHALEN AND YNGWIE MALSTEEM*cough*
Same thingflamenco players cant compete with classical guitarists. etc. etc. etc.
If he knew who Pantera were he could do the riffs but probably not the solo.could BB King play a Pantera song like it should be played? probably not,
Not if they're called Les Claypool, Mark King, Geddy Lee or Cliff Burtonand don't count out bass players either. they are often overshadowed by they leads.
