Joseph Azar - Yaffa

Hi,

I need help to correct my translation of Yaffa - a song for Joseph Azar from the Cd Al quds fil bal . Yaffa is a palestinian city occupied nowadays by the israelies.

خبرنا خبر عن يافا
Khabirna khabir 3an yaffa

و شراعي في ميناء يافا

and my boat in the port of Jaffa

يا أيام الصيد بيافا
ya ayyam assaydi biyaffa
Oh the good fishing days in Jaffa

نادانا البحر و يوماُ صحو فهيأنه المجدافا
nadana alba7rou wa yaouman sa77ou fahee2nahou almijdafa
The sea called us on a clear day and then we got the oars ready

نلمح في الخاطر أطياف عدنا بالشوق إلى يافا
Nilma7 fi alkhatira ateeafa 3aoudna bishshauq ila yaffa
we caught glimpses of our longing return to Jaffa

فجراُ أقلعنا
Fajr2an aqula3na
Then we set sail

زبداُ و شراع
zabdan wa shera3
foam and reef

في المقلة ضعنا و الشاطئ ضاع
Fi ilmouqlati da3na wa ashshaty da3
spread across the eyes and the shore was lost

هل كان الصيد وفيرا
Hal kana assaydou wafira ?
It was an abundant fishing ?

و غنمنا منه كثيرا
Wa ghanemna minhou katheera
we captured lots of fishes

قل من صبحٍ لمساء
Qul men soub7i limasa
???? from dawn until night

نلهو بغيوب الماء
Nelhou bighouyoub ilma2
we played with the secrets of the water

لكن في الليل في الليل
Laken fi illayl fi illayl
but at night at night

جائتنا الريح في الليل
Ja2tna arree7 fi illayl
the wind blew onto us at night

يا عاصفةُ هوجاء وصلت ماءُ بسماء
Ya 3assifatan hawja2 wassalat ma2 bimassa2
The waters of a violent storm reached the sky

عاصفة البحر الليلية قطعان ذئاب بحرية
3assifatou ulba7r illayleea qeta3anoun dhe2abi bahrya
the dark sea storm was like herds of sea wolves


أنزلنا الصاري أمسكنا المجداف
Inzalna assary amsakna al mejdaf
We laid down the mast and picked up the oars

نقسو و نداري و الموت بنا طاف
naqsou wa noudari wa almaoutou binna taf
we are hard and bold enough and death visited us

قاومنا الموج الغاضب غوطنا البحر الصاخب
Qawamna almaouja alghadib ghawatna alba7ra assakhib
we resisted the furious waves , the roar of the sea drowned us

و تشد و تعنف أيدينا و يشد يشد القارب
Wa tashouddu wa ta3nouf aydeena wa yashouddou yashouddou oulqarib
Our hands pull the boat firmly and the boat counter pull strongly

و يومها قالوا إننا ضائعون إننا هالكون في الأبد البارد
Wa yaoumouha qalou innana day23aoun innana halikoun fi ilabed ilbared
And one day they said that we were lost and destroyed in this meaningless existence

لكننا عدنا عدنا مع الصباح جئنا من الرياح كما يجئ المارد
Lakinana 3aoudna 3aoudna ma3 assabah7 ji2na mena arreea7 kaman iaji2u oulmared
But we went back in the morning. We came from where the wind also brings the brave

و دخلناها ميناء يافا
Wa dakhalnaha mina yaffa
And we entered the port of Jaffa

يا طيب العود إلى يافا
ya teeb al3aoud ila yaffa
Oh pleasant people who came back to Jaffa

و ملئنا الضفة أصدافا
Wa mala2na addifa asdafa
And we filled the shore with oysters

يا أحلى الأيام بيافا
Ya a7la alayyami biyaffa
Oh how beautiful were those days in Jaffa


كنا و الريح تهب تصيح نقول سنرجع يا يافا
Kounna wa arree7ou tahebou tasse7ou naqoul sanarji3aou ya yaffa
???? The wind is blowing and singing out that we will come back Oh Jaffa

و اليوم الريح تهب تصيح و نحن سنرجع يا يافا
wa alyaouma arree7ou tahebou tasse7ou wa na7nou sanarji3aou ya yaffa
And today the wind is blowing and singing out that we will come back Oh Jaffa

و سنرجع نرجع يا يافا سنرجع نرجع يا يافا
Wa sanarji3aou narji3aou ya yaffa
And we do come back Oh jaffa

Could anyone help me please ?

I've listened to it, and corrected it, but I have to check some voc. in my arabic dictionary...

خبرنا خبر عن يافا
tell us about Yaffa

نلمح في الخاطر أطياف عدنا بالشوق إلى يافا
we glimpse in our minds visions that took us back to Yaffa
(we recall our memories then we felt longing to Yaffa)

فجراُ أقلعنا
we set sail at dawn

زمدا وشراع (will check)

I've heard him saying in stead of في المقلة ضعنا والشاطئ ضاع
في المطلق ضعنا والشاطئ ضاع
we're completely (absolutely) lost, and so is the beach

هل كان الصيد وفيرا is question, so it'd be
was fishing abundunat?

قل من صبح لمساء
say (let's say) from day to night

نلهو بغيوب الماء ... (will check it)

جاءتنا وليس جائتنا
if you'd wite it like you did thn, it'd be ja2itna... did you get what I meant

يا عاصفة ً هوجاء وصلت ماءً بسماء
you wrote damma instead of tanween al-fat7

نقسو ونداري والموت بنا طاف
sometimes we're tough, and sometimes we're easly, and death surrounded us

لكنا عدنا
but we came back

وملأنا الضفة أصدافا and not ملئنا
note that if you prounce it as mali2na then you write ملئنا, but you prounce mala2na so you'll write it as ملأنا

كنا و الريح تهب تصيح نقول سنرجع يا يافا
كنا من كان يكون
as The wind was blowing we were screaming oh Jaffa we will come back

يصيح is screaming not singing

Thank you for the corrections. I only have a question on the verse bellow :

كنا و الريح تهب تصيح نقول سنرجع يا يافا
كنا من كان يكون

يصيح is screaming not singing

My new attempt :

We , and the wind that blows and screams , were saying : We will come back Oh jaffa.

According my dictionary to sing out means to sing or say something clearly and loudly: Ex : A voice suddenly sang out above the rest. So I thaught that "to sing out" would expresss better then "to scream" the idea of the author about the action of the wind. Anyway I guess both options of translation are accetable . What is your opinion ?

و here doesn't mean and I mean not for gathering, it means during or at the same time.
I'm sorry, I missed translating
as the wind was blowing and screaming, we were saying oh Yaffa, we'll come back

and for your translation, I can't agree with it, bcause what's obvious is that the wind doesn't want them to reach Yaffa, I mean it counters their aim.

in the following I've heard them saying
زندا وشراع
and not as I wrote before زمدا

and for غيوب الماء I could only find its singular as غيابة and it means bottom قعر

It's possible........... so translation would be :

While/when the wind was blowing and screaming/roaring we kept saying : we will return Oh jaffa !

But when he says the verse above they had already returned to Jaffa. So that he is talking about what happened during the storm.So my question is : How to connect the verse above to the next one :

Here are the verses :

Singer : كنا و الريح تهب تصيح نقول سنرجع يا يافا
Chorus : و اليوم الريح تهب تصيح و نحن سنرجع يا يافا


Maybe ? - " and today no matter the wind keeps blowing and screaming we will come back Oh Jaffa"

yes, your translation is absolutely right asfora

it means: the wind's still blowing 'n' screaming /roaring, but we're insisting to come back

zandan زندا is ulnar which is the area between the wrist and elbow
I think they wanted to say that our only mean to reach Yaffa is our hands and the ship's cloth.

I think they wanted to say that everything was going ok till the night..

p.s.: it's better to say مجيد instead of سعيد that's how you would distiguish Christmas from birthday, since they have the same phrase عيد ميلاد
