Do you know the progressive tense in english with the -ing form? (for example: I'm reading, we are eating, they are walking, etc.)... The "gerundio" is roughly the same: Estoy leyendo, estamos comiendo, están caminando, etc.
And in the participle the action is finished and we are talking about the result: la puerta está cerrada, la llave está perdida, etc. so the participle here takes the function of an adjective ... But if there's a proper adjective, then we use the adjectiv instead: la ventana está limpia (no 'limpiada'), la comida está caliente (no 'calentada'), etc.
