    Interesting too is that "barca" is "boat" in Romanian.

    (was there a moment in Greek history when "beta" was read "b" and not "v"?)

    The letter originally represented the b sound, and it's name was pronounced BETA. In Moderen Greek, however, βήτα is pronounced VITA and represents the v sound.

    So, in Ancient Greek Φόβος, the embodiment of fear and horror in Greek mythology was pronounced FoBos (hence "phobia"), while in Modern Greek it's FoVos. Respectively Φοίβη (Phoebe) was Foibe, and in Modern Greek it's Fivi.
