Default PLEASE HELP! I have a challenge for you guys!

My daughters friend asked me if I knew a song and hummed a line of it.

    What I do know is:

    1) This singer is from the 80's maybe 90's, not impossible if it was even earlier than that.

    2) He has a somewhat raspy voice.

    3) At first I thought it could be Meatloaf but I doubt it at this point. (Just to give you an idea of the direction my mind was going with this song.)

I THINK the lyrics go something like this but I know it's wrong because google gives me nothing and all those other sites where you can 'tap' the song with the spacebar or hum it (and I'm not tone deaf) isn't identifying the song.

He recalled it going starting with the lines "Holding on" like Hoooolding on.
When I was playing off of that and the tune he was humming for the rest of the line I got off the top of my head, "Holding on, to the rythm of the dawning of the night." (I know, dawning of the night makes no sense, bear with me) But that's what jumped out at me. I also thought for a moment that instead of "Holding on" It was a name like "Roseanna". I'm lost and this is driving me nuts and I can't let it go. But even if all the words are wrong the beat matches the line that's written. "Holding on, to the rythm of the dawning of the night"

I love both of those songs but that's not it. His voice was raspy like Steve Perry's. Here are the notes if I were to play it on the piano:
    D#2(dotted quarter note) C#2(eighth note) C#2(dotted quarter note) C#2(eighth) D#2(eighth) E2(sixteenth) E2(sixteenth) E2(eighth) E2(eighth) F#2(quarter note) E2(eighth) D#2(eighth) C#2(eighth) D#2(Dotted quarter) ROUGHLY LOL So anyone musically inclined, please play this and HELP! LOL

Thanks SO MUCH for the other suggestions. I forgot about those songs and Love them, now they'll be stuck in my head all day, which is okay beause I know the singer/song title.

This might help: http://www.melodycatcher.com/ You can enter the notes there to hear the tune, but it doesn't give you the option to change the notes so the tune makes more sense.

Hmm, to me it sounds a bit like "Wind Of Change" by Scorpions from Germany...
    (Though I wouldn't call Klaus Meine's voice "raspy" )

    In case it's not that...
Here's a line for musipedia with what you transcribed:

    dis'4. cis'8 cis'4. cis'8 dis'8 e'16 e'16 e'8 e'8 fis'4 e'8 dis'8 cis'8 dis'4.

You may paste this in the field below "Your melody" on the following site (and maybe do some corrections on the way if need be)

Well, using the transcription & musipedia above, that does sound a bit like Winds of Change by the Scorpions - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4RjJKxsamQ

The lyrics sound like a bit of a mashup between Rhythm of the Night by Debarge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAQSZhazYk8) and Simply Red for the beginning part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG07WSu7Q9w)
