Don't give me a woman
Who shaves down there
As long as she's wearing
Clean underwear
No video games
That's not for me
2-flipper pinball
Is fun guarantee
What's in is out
What's old is new
That's why they call me.......
Old School!!
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Retro,back-dated
I hear people say
That's why I'm always thinking
"Back-in-the-Day
I don't need nobody
To say I'm right
Only watch T.V.
If it's Black and White
What's in is out
What's old is new
That's why they call me
Old School
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
Old School,Old School,I know what's cool
A '57 Chevy
You just can't beat
Unless it's making out
In a rumble seat
No jogging for me
No workout pain
Unless it's being taught by
Jack La Lane
What's in is out
What's old is new
That's why they call me....[stop]

Doug,
Some very clever lyrics. You read my mind. I feel the same way.

Thanks Jim.I think it's easy to feel this way in this day and age.

Hey, Doug, a little graphic in the first verse, but then so are some other singer/songwriters I like--Keb' Mo, Dixie Chicks, Train's 'Move Like Jagger' and many others. This song rocks. I am not repeating "lingo" here. I mean it. I can hear it, see it, be it, the whole package is there.
The nostalgic references are not what "get me." The whole composition flows like a cool, fast stream through the woods--nobody could resist listening, stopping to breathe in the fresh air, and dipping their toes in!! Very good job!Last edited by Frankie Jasmine; 07-04-2012 at 09:07 PM.

Hi Doug, I hope we can see and hear this lyrics in a video, if someone can perform it, it´s gonna be a classic, the first for the 2000´s, the old school is never out, and you are right, the old things remain or come back in fashion, is a shame that I am not a music man to sing this amazing retro song. Gracias y saludos desde México.

P.S. I have to admit to loving the Jack LaLanne reference! A few years ago, his old B&W TV shows were re-aired on ESPN excercise mornings and I'd tune in! He was fantastic! He really knew people, especially women. He talked to them with such dignity (especially for that "man-rules" era). Sometimes I'd exercise with him, but sometimes I'd just watch and listen because he really had a dynamic, engaging personality, and even inspiring things to say. He knew who his audience was at that time (1950s???). During the "commercial breaks" which he referred to on these old films, they would air modern Jack LaLanne commercials for things he and his family were still selling (e.g., juicers). I liked the show so much that I sent off for a hat and T-shirt!! "I exercise with Jack LaLanne"!!! I smile every time I see my T-shirt!
He died not that long ago . . . at age 96. He was born in 1914 when the average lifespan of an American male was age 52!

Thanks,Frankie,I wasn't sure anybody would know or get that reference.Glad you did and shed a little light on Jack.He was born in San Francisco(as was health food pioneer Gypsy Boots/Robert Bootzin)and would do stunts that were reported on the local news channels there. He would swim from Fisherman's Wharf to Alcatraz(with his hands cuffed)and swim underwater the length of the Golden Gate Bridge.(with air tanks and towing something,if memory serves)His T.V. Show was aired originally in late 50's early60's in Black and White, before color T.V. shows or sets!A lot of information for a rhyme!

The "rhyme" deserves it.
Jack LaLanne deserves it. -
Great stuff
It moves like a song
So you can't be wrong
It's got pop 'n sizzle
Not an ounce of frizzle
So let it ride
Till it tans some hide
and on the flipside
They be callin' you Clyde
Lol .... first bit of spark I've had in a year or more, so I couldn't let it pass. There is no glamour in sudden death, and nobody ever wins a war.

Kathy B.;
Is this AABA you keep referring to in your Replies?I don't have a clue what "proper"songwriting structure is.Of what I learned, this is that structure. Please correct me if I'm wrong,as I'd like to know what it is you're referring to!Thanks! -
No....AABA
is something like this....(off the cuff here)
You're Never Far Away
Verse(A)
I hit the shower with shampoo and soap
couldn't wait to scrub away the day
sunscreen salt n ocean from the boat
I can still see you lying in bed
warm and soft all tangled in sheets
you're never outta my heart n head
You're never far away
Verse(A)
I'm rocking and feeding crying babies
so that maybe we'll sleep tonight
and tomorrow I won't feel so lazy
but I know no matter what happens
you'll be right here to catch my back
through it all life love and passion
You're never far away
Bridge(B)
would I do it again
take your hand
Verse (A)
I think you get the point!
That is the structure or format of an AABA song. Is what I wrote a great or good song...probably not but it shows you the format.Kathy -
@KathyB,
I'm still trying to write a song using your method.For some reason........I can't! -
I'm just glad to see you're still hanging around!
As far as how easy or hard it is........for some reason I just don't "hear"songs that way.I was listening to Joni Mitchell,I noticed she wrote in the way you demonstrated (comment #12)and since she is one of my favorite singer/songwriters I had to at least try to understand the lyrics written in this manner.I'm still learning, thanks to you and Joni. -
-
Okay you don't hear the song that way, I wouldn't want you to stifle the creativity you obviously have. So, write the song the way you hear it then finesse it into the form you want it to be in. Make that hook jump and jam in the right spot.
Think of it like sex, there are some moves that get it done but then there are some moves that get it done and then some!
Same thing with writing a song.Kathy -
Yes, for me this song really gets it done! This is not about being backdated because you can't keep up with the modern times (and you can't tell an iPod from an iPad). This is like: say it loud, I'm old school and I'm proud.
What does it take to make even Rihanna sound cool and old school: The Baseballs!
