What is the difference between them?

This is a hard question. Prepositions usualy have a general meaning . In romance languages, except some situations in Romanian, we use them instead of what other languages like german or some slavic ones use cases [dative, genitive or instrumental, etc].

We will talk of each preposition later. The best thing to do is to understand that most prepositions do not come alone and that some verbs require specific prepositions, we say "regencia verbal" and we must learn them together. This is trouble even for us, natives and we many times use wrong prepositions.

But also, some nouns require naturally prepositions. Grammar calls it "Regência Nominal". Let's start with them.

Note that when it is possible we can change a adjective by a respective noun and the regency remains the same:

I will follow the bright ideas of this russian-portuguese dictionary that so kindly divided the meaning of preposition de in Portuguese:

1) To qualify an object, to show a relation between an object and its owner. Other languages call it genitive and no preposition is used. It is the English "'s" or "of"

In such case, sometimes we can permute de and para:

The function of the object can be enlarged as long as desired, and when it i made of an infinitive, it can be transformed into a new clause introduced by conjunction que with convinient inflection of the verb.

5) To express the content of an object, what's inner of it

In this sense, it is indispensable the use of de with such verbs that talks about a path vir, chegar, partir, sair

Para

In most of cases we can permute "a" and "para". Colloquial portuguese in Brazil shows clear preference for the last one. We also use it in place of the atone forms of pronoums "me, te, o(s), a(s), lhe(s), nos, vos" in some verbs and so we say "para mim, para ti, para ele(a)" (this is also possible with other prepositions)

Quero te falar um segrego
Quero falar um segredo pra ti
I want to tell you a secret

This preposition has the following meanings

1) To point the noun(s) that will receive some kind of action. In this sense in English it means "to" or "for" and it is the linking preposition of many transitive verbs

Ela deu o livro para mim
She gave the book to me

Esse presente é pra você
This gift is for you

Telefone pra ela
A phone call for her

2) To introduce a sentence that expresses finality, objective.

Chegue mais cedo para nós conversarmos
Come back home early so that we can talk!
