Pet names for lovers, definitely. Or very close female buddies (among females) ... I'd never call any of my male friends "Schatz" without really meaning it
And I never heard this among guys unless they were joking.

Yes ... I don't call my female friends "Schatzi", but if I did there would be nothing much about it. Nobody would pay any closer attention to it. And kissing between girls is OK as well, for example when you meet a close friend you kiss them on the cheek or even on the mouth - but just a short kiss

There's two ways to express "I love you" in German
