the same ài as in "love"
kě ài de xiǎo gāo = cute kitten / cute small cat
zhēn kě ài = really cute
hěn kě ài = very cute
zhèn me kě ài = this cute (so cute)
nà me kě ài = that cute (so cute)

qīn ài = dear, beloved
qīn ài de mā ma = dear (beloved) mother
qīn ài de xiǎo māo = dear little cat
qīn ài de hái zi = dear child/children (no plurals in Chinese except for pronouns)

It's very hard to explain the word "de"... There are 3 different words like this, used differently and with no equivalents in any other language I can think of... Here, this one is used for adjectival (is that a word?) phrases.
You put the adjective + de + noun for a description in this form.
