Can anyone explain to me how the participles are formed?

The words like these: держа, склонясь, подняв.

At least, I think they're participles. I'm not sure. I was able to kind of guess they're meaning just by context and what words they came from, but I wish to know just exactly how they work. A link to an English or Russian site would work as well as any explanation you guys could offer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
