Question about the Alif.

I notice that when you put the article 'Al' in front of a word, The 'a' sound seems to repeat itself:

Riyad (Ar-Riyad): الرياض‎

Why are there two alif's when there's only one 'a' sound?

erweeni = quench my thirst

ma5loo2a majnoone - ya3ni a crazy person, ma5lu2a can be used for a person (i.e a creation, person) ma5loo2 for male, ma5loo2a for female

So I see first the 'Alif' standing by itself, I take it thats the 'ar' part of 'ar-riyad'. Then I see another alif followed by the 'r' sound.

Are one of the letters not an alif or something?

i think you saw the L as an alif

look alriyad word letters when separated are :
ا ل ر ي ا ض
when connected the L seem like alif a bit so maybe thats why you were confused
