What’s the difference between мечта and сон?

"Мечта" is something you're dreaming of (when you're awake; that's important). E.g. "я мечтаю быть президентом" - I'm dreaming of being a president; "я мечтаю о новой машине" - I'm dreaming of a new car, i.e. I want to be a president or to have a new car.

"Сон" is something you "see" when you sleep. For example while you were sleeping you had a dream (= a vision) that you were walking down the moon and it was made of cheese :-)

In other words, "сон" is a vision that your brain makes when you're sleeping, and "мечта" is something you're longing for. Hope this helps.

Ahhh! That very much makes sense! The dictionary always did say "daydream" for мечта, but I never got that meaning out of it.
