Отчего так в России берёзы шумят,
Отчего белоствольные всё понимают,
У дорог, прислонившись, по ветру стоят,
И листву так печально кидают.

Я пойду по дороге, простору я рад
Может это лишь все, что я в жизни узнаю,
Отчего так печальные листья летят,
Под рубахою душу лаская

А на сердце опять горячо, горячо,
И опять и опять без ответа
А листочек с берёзки упал на плечо
Он как я оторвался от ветки

Посидим на дорожку родная с тобой
Ты пойми я вернусь, не печалься не стоит
И старуха махнёт на прощанье рукой
И за мною калитку закроет

Отчего так в России берёзы шумят,
Отчего хорошо так гармошка играет,
Пальцы ветром по кнопочкам в раз пролетят,
А последнее, эх, западает.

Why do birches rustle like this in Russia?
Why do the white-stemmed understand everything,
By the roads, leaning <against something?>*, stand down the wind
And drop their leaves so wistfully?

*I suspect it's a mishearing and the right word is prisklonivšiś bending a little down, not prislonivšiś: the latter makes no sense for me.

I'll go along the road, I love the scope.
Maybe that's all I shall ever learn in my life -
Why do the wistful leaves fly like this,
Caressing my soul underneath my shirt?

And my heart is hot, hot again,
And again and again there's no answer.
And the leave has fallen onto my shoulder again,
It has come off the branch just like me.

Let's sit for the road* with you, my dear,
Try to understand me, I'll be back, don't be sad, it's not worth it,
And the old woman** will wave her hand farewell
And close the gate behind me.

*That's a tradition to sit for a while saying nothing before a long trip, I don't know particularly whether it's Russian or international.
** Probably his mother; I mean, it's ok to call a known old woman just an "old woman", it's sort of a tender naming here.

Why do birches rustle like this in Russia?
Why does the garmoshka* play so good?
Fingers will rapidly cover the buttons,
But the last one,** oh, sticks.

*A sharp-less mini-accordion; however, bayan, a big accordion, is sometimes called garmoška, too.
** A mishearing again, it's obviously about the last button, not about the last something, so it should have been in different gender.
