    A thousand ashen whys
windblown to where souls turn to sand
    (that) refill(s) the hourglass
There is no glamour in sudden death, and nobody ever wins a war.

What point is life if our humanity is dead?

Within our subjective human experience - whatever point we find in it.
Outside it - whatever point there may or may not be; we wouldn't know - we only have our subjective experience.

I often wonder what point our ancestors found in their life; for hundreds of generations, their life would have struggled to compare favourably to that of Syrians today. Better alive than dead?...

You're comparing two different civilizations, one of which today would be viewed as barbaric and backwards, proving that we havent progressed at all as human beings.

During that time, their life was acceptable to them, the fight for survival, survival of the fittest, the fastest, the biggest, the stronger - but now? Are we insinuating that seeing thousands being killed daily is somehow normal and acceptable?
