What is the meaning of (mış)?

-mış is a verb ending. From my understanding, it puts things in the past, and it gives a different meaning than the regular past tense. It makes the knowledge of the verb less certain, gives the idea like "I heard that.../ it's said/ I think/ it seems/ I found out..."
To be very honest, I don't understand its use perfectly. It is used very often though in situations where I'd think to use the regular past tense.

Hmm, I'm not sure how to answer that, to be honest. You know the meaning of -miş now as well as I do, and I think you know the meaning of güzel and çirkin... I think its exact meaning would depend a bit on the context...

endings -di and -miş, they both describe the events in the past,
-miş being used for uncertainty.

-miş case/tense was given the name "rivayet", (rumour, hearsay) before,
i don't remember what they call it for the time being.

the following formula shows their relation

-miş := {it's said that, they said,...} ROOT -di,

where {...} denotes the set of expressions to be used for -di to converge -miş.

rather than starting with this example lets translate
two sentences in english for a comparative study

when i met her she was very beautiful	onu tanıdığımda çok güzeldi	I saw her myself
when he met her she was very beautiful	onu tanıdığında çok güzelmiş	he said so

and from the lyrics

Aşkın yalanmış	Your love was (a) lie	I wasn't aware then, now I know it
Aşkın yalandı	Your love was (a) lie	I knew it but accepted

so when translating from turkish to english you will have to
take help from the context, if necessary. (as p. has already stated)

for a rigorous translation you may say

güzelmiş // she is said to be beautiful

I hope this simplified explanation gives a reasonable insight
of what's going on....

This would be like: beautiful or ugly, what's the difference/what does it matter? (ie it doesn't matter if it/she/etc was beautiful or ugly)
